Specific hotels or addresses? York is a BIG city and hotels are all over the place.

You can tell by the neighborhood. National chains are generally safe. I am not comfortable staying at those mom and pop motels where you park right in front of your room, but many do.

If your going to Lancaster, why don't you find a hotel there? There is a cute little very clean and safe hotel right on the corner from The Sight and Sound Theater....it is called The Fulton Steamboat Inn, actually shaped like a steamboat.

There is also another great place, that has wonderful buffets, called Best Western Premier Eden Resort & Suites which is very nice.

Your right in Lancaster and will also be near the great buffet that everyone always wants to visit called Shady Maple?

The Sight and Sound Theater is Awesome, just like seeing a NY Broadway show.

Also, The Kitchen Kettle Village...
Jam & Relish Kitchen at Kitchen Kettle Village
3529 Old Philadelphia Pike (Route 340)
Intercourse, PA 17543

Shaddy Maple
Which is a wonderful huge buffet, there is great store, we always take a cooler along and walk down to the store, and shop, as things are less expensive and meats are tasty....

All these attractions are outside of the city of Lancaster....
It is safer and right in the heartland of the Amish, the city of Lancaster, is just like a city...but you drive outside the city, there are so many wonderful attractions....

York is at least 30 min from Lancaster. I concur, anything along PA 30 should be OK. Cross the river into Lancaster county and you'll find plenty from Centerville inward to Lancaster. All the tourist outlets/traps/draws are on the east side and there is no shortage of places to stay out there but I'd suspect the rates may be higher due to this. You can also find nice places in the outskirt towns (Mt Joy, Elizabethtown, Ephrata, Strasburg, etc depending on where you want to be).

York City isn't doing well crime-wise. I'd rather stay in downtown Lancaster than York any day.

I didn't mind the noise of the traffic? Maybe it was the time we were there? Not sure.

The Eden Inn is also beautiful.
