Lewisburg move--New Berlin info please!!! (Shamokin, Mifflinburg: real estate market, house, buy)

We're relocating to Lewisburg and in searching the real estate market, we're interested in New Berlin, but there's no information about the town anywhere; I know the basics but we're wondering what it's like to actually live there and if Mifflinburg and Lewisburg conveniences are handy enough or if living there is kind of isolating--we've got young kids, too and I was wondering what parks New Berlin may have! Thanks so much!!!!!

Ah yes, New Berlin.

Well, I do know a little bit about it. It's a very small village with several stop signs and a part-time cop. It's very close knit and somewhat clannish. It's extremely quiet but the Mifflinsburgers love to go through there as a short cut to the Strip in Hummels Wharf-Shamokin Dam. So, the traffic can get noisy when the big Friday night arrives and it's time to go and hang out at Lowe's and Wal_Mart and then stop at McDonalds or the China House buffet.

Actually, I wouldn't mind living there myself, but everyone would know my business and whomever else lives there too. It comes with the territory. The folks are friendly enough and will help the neighbors in a crisis.

All the students are bused to the Mifflinburg schools which Mifflinburg is about 4-5 miles away. They have a nice little park along Penns Creek, an American Legion, a pizza shop, and a Vo-Tech school. I think there is also a convenience store and one gas station. I think taxes are fairly decent and not too overwhelming.

I hope that helped a little bit as I'm not an expert on the village.

We used to attend the Lutheran church there (only switched because we moved) and all my kids went to preschool there. My oldest also had a newspaper route there for a couple of months a few years ago. There is an elementary school in New Berlin but middle and high schoolers go to Mifflinburg. The village is somewhat remote and you do have to drive to most things. There are three churches to choose from, if you wish (Lutheran, UCC and Methodist) and a newly redone community center. The Inne at New Berlin is there, with an upscale restaurant and lodging. I believe there are a few beauty parlors and a yoga center!

One bothersome thing is that there is no home mail delivery in New Berlin. Everyone has a box in the Post Office and you'd have to pick up your mail there - unless you're outside of town along the rural route.

There are many community events at "The Commons" (the park along the creek) throughout the year, the biggest of which is a fantastic fireworks display on July 4th.

I would not buy in Mifflinburg. The puritans ran the pilgrams out as the pilgrams were to wild... you know the casino type.

oh- they resist an exist off of i80. so the drive is longer to get to Lewisburg.

Both Snyder and Union county have poorly designed roads. You can drive in circles on roads with no names, no signs, and a good 90 minutes.... stop and ask direction? to whom? lol

Vickburg is between Lewisburg and mifflingburg

If you have school age children, there is a significant difference between Lewisburg and the neighboring school districts.

The economic base in Lewisburg is heavily influenced by all the professors and Geisinger doctors who live there. Because education was important in their career options, they care about education, and there is a lot of support for the schools. The schools, as a result, are excellent, comparable to good big city suburban schools in the curriculum and the quality of the teachers.

It's a different story in Mifflinburg. You don't have the professional base, and you don't have the assumption that higher education is destined. The schools are not terrible, but if you have academic aspirations for your kids it's a better idea to be in Lewisburg.

If you don't have kids or don't care if they go to fancy colleges, housing prices are a bit lower in New Berlin or Mifflinburg, especially for classic old homes. The whole gentrification and fix up thing hasn't hit there so much, although there are some great old homes.

Socially, Lewisburg is going to be a lot more liberal than the surrounding areas. A lot of the residents from Lewisburg have moved there from one big city or another; that's less true in the surrounding areas.

Lewisburg also is going to have more good restaurants and neat little shops than the other towns.

New Berlin and Mifflinburg are close enough so that you can easily get to Lewisburg for, say, a movie or a sporting event, but they are far enough out that you aren't living in Lewisburg, and the day to day stuff probably won't be part of your life. Your friends, favorite coffee shop, kids' parks, etc., are all going to be where you live.
