Congratulations to the Nittany Lyons for their stunning comeback from football oblivion a few years ago to being invited to participate in the most prestigious bowl game. Kudos to the coaches and players!

I attend a borough meeting on the 1st Monday at 7 pm.

Discussion yesterday went:

"We need to advertise the 2017 Meetings. Should we go ahead and meet on 1/2/17 though it's the legal holiday?"

"Um, uh, I guess we might as well..."

Mayor quickly interrupts: "The Rose Bowl kicks off at 5 pm on the 2nd."

Universal acclamation on council: "Move our meeting to Tuesday!"

Nice. Maybe people will not realize that PSU paid Mike McQueary $12.3M for being a whistleblower, yet Joe Paterno and the administration did nothing for the kids that were raped.

At least the borough meeting people will be happy!

The Penn State football players were innocent victims of administrative malfeasance. Louis Freeh, the man hired to investigate the scandal is tainted himself. The university paid Freeh and his team over $8 million for his services and settled the many lawsuits stemming from Freeh's report for a reported $60 million. The partners at the Williamsport law firm Rieders, Travis, Humphrey, Harris, Waters and Waffenschmidt earned enough to retire after that settlement.

Agree 100% about the football players (although, I wouldn't use the term victim, given the context).

Not sure what your point is about the University (read: taxpayers) paying a bunch of money to some random law firm or Louis Freeh.

Within hours of the scandal's emergence, a movement arose, supposedly "spontaneous", but protected by the anonymity of the Internet, to shift the blame from one depraved individual to the University, the football program, and Coach Paterno himself.

It is well-known that a resentment against the culture of sport in institutions of higher education has always existed in some segments of the academic world, and the mention of the name "Penn State" provided these malcontents with an opportunity to soil one of their favorite targets.

Until and unless something develops which allows us to learn the identities of those who organized and fed this campaign of smear tactics, I will consider the issue unresolved -- and I don't discount the possibility that other high-ranking University officials or members of the Board of Trustees might be involved -- it just seems possible to me that Paterno and the players on the 2011 (and subsequent) trams might have been "thrown under the bus".

If so, the strategy apparently hasn't worked.
