Do some research and don't judge the town by a drive through. Get to know the place and find out its inner beauty. Learn the history, get to know the residents, and get involved. If you find out everything, then and only then, can you make an opinion that is appropriate.

Actually, I'm not judging from a simple drive through town. I grew up in the Pine Grove/Tremont area and know the town and its people very, very well. I have family that still lives in town. It is not a place that I would ever or recommend that anyone else ever move to. You said yourself that most people look at newcomers strangely because they wonder why anyone would want to move there.
bellabella I agree that if you stay to the southern end of the county, you will mostly likely be fine. The more northern old coals towns are where few new people move to and most strangers are looked upon with suspicion, especially where there are few people of different ethnicities. It's unfortunate, but it's not the most open-minded area. I would stick to Schuylkill Haven and south.

Welcome!
To Tremont Newwbie. Welcome to our town! I was a 'newbie' myself 18 years ago, and have never looked back. Raised my kids here and some were able to buy homes here because of the reasonable real estate. My wife is from Newport RI, and I am from E. Connecticut originally, but our home is now here, in quiet Tremont. The cost of living really is cheaper and allows for a lot more disposable income for travel or whatever. I work in Harrisburg for the DOC and commute daily, but will not trade the travel time for my town. It's always a relief to get home and chill. By the way, my son is a youth soccer coach if your kids are interested. If you have any questions, please e-mail me

Hi there!!
My husband arrived today to PA (Schuylkill Haven) and he will be searching for homes anywhere where he can commute to Schuylkill Haven.
We are a military family and after reading about the area and having a difficult time finding decent suitable housing for us, we are thinking of moving to the housing area at Carlisle Barracks. According to Yahoo Maps that is a a one hour 19 minutes commute. 71 miles each way.
I know with gas prices it seems crazy but I do get to live in a nice community with other military families. There are schools, commisary, PX, gyms... If my husband deploys I will be a good location for the family.
Does anybody here commute that far? How is the traffic in the HWY from Harrisburg going east before the exit to Schuylkill Haven?
Any info will be appreciated..
Thanks

Commute Info
Well, the traffic in the morning out of harrisburg is bad. This is expecially problematic on the main bridge over the Susquehanna. Furthermore, the commute is more along the lines of 1 hour and 20 minutes. My mother made the trip from Schuylkill County to the Carlisle area for two years until we moved to the harrisburg area. I would recommend either moving to south central Schuylkill County or the northern Reading Suburbs. From the Reading area the commute would only be 20-40 minutes. Carlisle would be a nice place to live but your probably wouldn't like long trip to and from Schuylkill Haven.

Hi there!
Is the traffic bad from 5:30 am to 6:30 am out of Harrisburg? That will be the likely hours of my husband's morning commute.
thanks..

Traffic
From thet time, the traffic will be picking up, but it gets worse in the later morning (e.g. 7:30 to 9:00). But once you are in lebanon and Schuylkill County there are no traffic problems whatsoever (unless there are accidents which are problematic on the mountainous sections of I 81 between the Pine Grove and Tremont exits).

traffic
I have no problems on either 81 or 581 to Camp Hill between 6 and 7 am. Traffic gets heavier about 6:45 on all routes into H-Burg. If he's going to Carlisle it should be an easy morning commute on 81.

we got housing!
Hi everyone. I am very excited about going to my new home. I will live and work in Carlisle Barracks. I am excited. I have to start organizing everything for my daughter's schooling and activities.
We were going to get housing on DDC (New cumberland) but we backed out of it. I just didn't feel like living so close to Three Mile Island. I don't know but the housing briefing included information about taking a pill for radiation exposure and I just didn't feel right. I decided it was best to move to Carlisle. I am not sure if radiation exposure from nuclear waste is an issue there but I feel better I will not be withing a 10 mile radious of TMI.
