It's a city and it's in Pennsylvania not NJ : )) Maybe try to the Pennsylvania Thread. And yes, crime is in abundance as with any city - may want to consider moving to the outskirts?

Many Southern NJ residents are originally from Philadelphia. Others arent and swear they are and prove their Philly worth by starting these annoying South Jersey/Philly vs North Jersey/NY beefs. If youre from South Jersey its gettin old!!
Anyway, I get down to Philly enough to answer this question. Economy is mostly hospitals, Comcast, law firms, universities. Center city is nice, Manayunk and Chestnut Hill fine too. Far northeast Philly and South Philly by the stadiums are ok too. The rest of the city can be rough depending on your tolerance level for both "marginal" and "bad" areas. Theres an area called "the badlands"...enough said. North Philly makes Brooklyn look like a picnic.

I think you will find Center City a little more than "nice." No offense, but it's amazing how an out-of-towner sums up an entire city in 6 short sentences.

I'm tired of people sh*** in on Philly like its some little Newark extension. There is a lot more to Philly than those neigborhoods. The city may not be big as NYC ( which I'm from by the way)but it is still too big to generalize.

The crime is MOSTLY in certain areas of the city. All major cities have ghettos where the crime rate is high.
Stay out of North Phiily, Southwest philly, West Philly (except maybe University City where Uni of Penn and Drexel U. is located), if you wanna experince city life stick to CENTER CITY. Plenty of nighlife and culture you want all in walking distance relatively speaking.
