We are moving cross country for work. My job has be going to Towson, MD and York, PA. I do not know the area and trying to figure out where to live. I have two small kids and would to like to live in a safe family friendly area that allows me to commute quickly to work and has good schools specifically looking at private. We were looking at moving to York not downtown in some developments of the 83 but I am getting a little nervous about York after reading some comments. Any thoughts much appreciated.

Many York area professionals live within the Dallastown Area School District, which is highly rated. Red Lion Area School District and the Southeastern School Districts are closer to the MD border but are not as highly rated. Many Marylanders have moved into those districts and now commute to the Baltimore region. Towson, MD, which I assume that you mean, is a Baltimore suburb. MD has county school districts, which don't make for local control.

You'll probably be looking in southern York County for easy access via 83 to the Baltimore area. It's a fine area that is developing rapidly (I think PA property taxes might be lower) and just a short hop into Maryland.

Take a lot of the postings about York city with a grain of salt.

Towson MD is a really nice town. I went to school there and the downtown has a cute walkable feel to it, and there's a huge mall as well. I would assume MD taxes and COL would be higher though then PA, but I'd much rather move to Towson then York PA. Just my two cents but good luck on the move.

Depends on where you will work the most. If you are mostly working in Towson, I'd stick to MD (Hunt Valley, Towson, Phoenix, Jarrettsville, etc) because the commute from MD to PA is much better than vice versa. If you are going to work mostly in PA, I'd recommend Stewartstown, New Freedom, Dallastown, Jacobus areas which are super easy commutes to York and nice areas to live in (I live in the area).
