A subcommittee of the Greencastle Borough Council decided this week it will ask the full board to explore a possible merger between Greencastle and Antrim Township, making it one municipality.

“A lot of the elected officials on council have privately or in small groups said it is at least worth exploring whether or not it's in the best interest of the whole community for the municipal boundaries to be erased and to make us one,” said Eden Ratliff, Greencastle's borough manager.

Greencastle-Antrim is seen by most as one community with a school district that bears that name, but consists of the two municipalities, the Borough of Greencastle and Antrim Township. On the map, Greencastle is in the middle of a square that is Antrim Township.

This is an interesting proposal. Many PA municipalities should look into doing this. However, even in the most favorable conditions, I highly doubt this would ever pass in a ballot initiative. The naysayers are usually the ones that vote.

It would definitely be beneficial budget-wise, but there is a lack of political will to do so.
