Default Thank you

Thanks for the replies. We were considering a 4 acre parcel on Strawberry Lane (Know that road Bob?) but after looking at it and spending more time driving around the county, we're going to look nearer the Carlisle area. We like the quiet and solitude of Perry but think it would be better to be nearer to "civilization" especially as we're planning this as our last home and would prefer to grow older near to the things that are needed. I don't want to be one of those old guys wearing a hat and careening around the roads on long drives to the Dr office!! As long as we have a large enough piece of property so that we have a bit of breathing space and I have room to build a woodshop, a few acres.
Mike

I think living near Carlisle is an excellent choice. Much of the area around Carlisle once you get away from town has a rural feel, and Carlisle itself is IMO one of the nicest towns in Pennsylvania. There is actually a decent amount of shopping in the immediate Carlisle area, and if you can't find what you want, there is even bigger shopping on the Harrisburg "West Shore" 10-15 miles to the east of Carlisle.

Hi Mike
Yes if I remember right Strawberry La. is right in town behind the PRO hardware/grocery on Rt74 just north of the Ickesburg square.
I agree with Chip, Carlisle is a very nice area. I looked at several place between Carlisle and Shippensburg (Walnut Bottom) before I bought in Ickesburg. I pass through Carlisle weekly on my way to Ickesburg. Sometimes stop for dinner or breakfast depending on time of day.
Good luck in your property hunting.

Bob

Can you also tell me how well those routes are maintained during the winter months ie: snow storms.

Can you also tell me if there are decent Drs. and other med facilities relatively nearby.

In short, other than schools; whatever info you can provide would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Mike,

We moved to Perry Co. from Virginia Beach about two years ago. We live on 36 acres in Shermans Dale. Here are some facts and answers to your questions:

Cable/Internet
-------------------------------
We first had a satellite-based provider and Dish network, but then Comcast ran a line from our road up to the house (over 500 ft). Now we are all set. If you are anywhere near downtown Bloomfield or Shermans Dale, you have the DSL option from Embarq (Sprint) as well.

Roads
--------------------------------
I live up on a small mountain about 5 miles from Shermans Dale proper (the village) and my roads, all the way to the the I-81 ramps in Marysville or Carlisle are always cleared rapidly and well maintained. In fact, I used to work in downtown Harrisburg and they simply ran out of plowing money last year once. I got off 81 and found downtown H'Burg to be a complete snowfield...meanwhile, the roads at my house were just ducky.

Medical
--------------------------------
Our kids go to a Doctor in New Bloomfield (10 miles North) and we go to a practice right in Shermans Dale. There's a dentist in Shermans Dale.

Shopping
---------------------------------
There is absolutely no problem with shopping.

In Shermans Dale village, we have Village Square, which has a large Grocery (Seaman's), a hardware store, a Post Office, Pizza and Chinese, a Video and game rental, a small cafe, a diner, a Dollar general, and a Rite-Aid. In fact, we have two pizza shops, and a Subway sandwich place as well. Also, there are two or three banks and two gas stations, one small and local, the other a BP with laundromat, car wash, and convenience store.

In Landisburg, you have several shops as well, all smallish.

In New Bloomfield (Country seat), there's all we have in Sherman's Dale and a dandy good grocery called Karn's...they have excellent meats and great seafood specials. (you'll find King Crab legs here cheaper than anywhere I've seen - sometimes $6 a pound - I suppose as a result of being so near a trucking/shipping hub).

In Duncannon, you have a decent-sized medical facility, many shops, a hotel (mostly used by Appalachian Trail hikers), a pub, restaurants, and another great grocery named Mutzabaugh's.

Marysville is just 12 miles straight East of us on the Susquehanna river. There you will find pretty much everything you need if you can't find it elsewhere in Perry.

Carlisle is just 10 miles South of me and that seals the deal. You have Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Lowes, all the fast food chains, movie theater, all the clothing shops (Marshalls, etc.) and a good sized regional hospital. Oh, and loads of nice restaurants.

* You can't beat the prices out here...you just can't.
