Dude, did you read the stats? NY's average median income is only around $400 above PA's. That's very negligible. Also, based on your same logic with Maine having a low population, other states like New Jersey, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut should not be held to the same standards because their states aren't as large and do not have as much of a population in which there is as great of a need to sustain a decent standard-of-living. Thus, it's no accident that the largest states in the Northeast (PA and NY) placed after eveyone else. Throw in the fact that NJ, CT, and DE's overall affluence is a DIRECT result of their geographical proximity to good-paying jobs in NYC and Philly, and you have your results.

Clearly not, since it came ahead of 28 other states.

I can't complain about wages in southeastern Pennsylvania -- I work for a nonprofit in Philadelphia and am compensated very well, but my fundraising brethren in the rest of the state probably aren't paid as well.

Alas, the high cost of living here, especially in taxes (!), housing and food, eats up any gains I've made in salary.

The the Depressed former Coal Mining Towns. Lived around these all my life and YES depressing. people are narrow minded and uncultured. Bars are plentiful and so are the Beer Guts in women and men!
I know Scranton loves his area but he is 19 and has not lived here as long as most of us who are fed up.
3 years and counting and we are retiring to another state..
Bu the way this state is full of elderly who have little and can't move even if they wanted to financially or physically.

When they are all gone who will pay all these HIGH taxes!

Very true- there are no jobs.

By the way Lake Harmony is filled with people from the city(Philly,New York and Jersey). High end homes that are unheard of in parts of the Poconos. You still need to drive and drive to get to a mall if your in the country or small community.
If you lived here long enough you know the real people(Cunnermens- they are like Redneck Welfare and abundant in the rural Poconos).
Georges minimart use to have a cat that would pee on the product all the time and the city people would by it!

The Developments up by Lake Harmony have a major robbery problem(even the gated communities). Most of these homes are summer homes so break ins are Very high now a days. Also I hear there is the Russian Mafia in one of the the developments up there.

But hey, if your live somewhere else and just visit it is great! -Living here full time brings in the full story.

I'm not nuts about the hot summers, much preferring snow and temperatures 40-60 degrees, but Philly has some great spots (I'm in the suburbrs), not to mention some of the best hospitals and universities on the planet. I'm 15 minutes from the Main Line as well as beautiful Chester County. I can pop over the bridge to Gloucester County, NJ, for wonderful fresh vegetables in the summer, or do a short drive to DE for tax-free shopping. My neighborhood is a friendly and pristine place to live. Just can't be sad about that...sorry...

Where you live is a Whole different world. The North IS depressing. Think former Coal Mine Towns that are struggling to reinvent themselves since the Coal Barrons robbed the land and left the towns a mess after they made their millions. Economic Development is not happening for many of these areas and it is a sad and Depressing site!

The not being able to buy beer in the grocery store is depressing !! I have only been here a short while and I can allready see that the politicians are a little questionable.

Lake Harmony........just wonderful.........I see more crime on just regular roads then in a community.......not including PCP which is a haven for crime and not a soul should move there. There is one other gated community I would pass up too.........anyway
Lake Harmony......has the nicest restaurant on the Lake called Nicks Lake House. You can eat outdoors, you can take your motor boat if you live there and park it up to the restaurant. There is golf there.....other fun places to eat...like Piggy's ....all day breakfast and icecreams for the kids. ...Shenanigans for night time fun...
I see not problems with Lake Harmony and I buy the News everyday........
The lake is gorgeous.......Nicks has a nice glass room to sit and watch out over the lake. Relaxing.........

OK I will grant ya' one.......the crime that developed after 9/11 with the city coming this way........into areas that were not compatiable to that type of lifestyle. But, its getting nipped, real, real, quick.........
