Pittsburgh area : on an economic angle, certainly....on a social or cultural level, not at all. That's the town I grew up in, and while there certainly are flaws it's a beautiful city in terms of the people there.

Central PA (Harrisburg and surrounding areas) : I spent 6 years in this area after college, I found it to be the most socially desolate and disconnected area I've ever seen. Economically, it's a wreck as well.

Philadelphia area : Lots of culture, music, arts and so forth.....but it's a mess economically as well (it's the 5th largest city in the nation, and it's also amongst the nation's top ten poorest metro areas). The traffic, sucks, and the people largely....are some of the rudest human beings I've ever met.

There's a reason why that city is nicknamed Filthadelphia....and it's more than just the ever-spreading ghetto and the attitude of it's citizen's.
Economically a wreck? Harrisburg and State College probably have the strongest economy in the state. Outside of those metros it is pretty bad, no doubt.

Completely and utterly wrong. In fact, the Philly metro is the wealthiest in the state based on median income, not to mention one of the wealthiest in the entire country:

Philadelphia is also making great strides in revitalization, so I'd hardly refer to the whole city as "filth." Clearly you're not updated on these things living in North Carolina now.

Completely ridiculous statements. However, when you acknowledge that you grew up in Pittsburgh, it largely explains your anti-Philadelphia sentiment.

Also completely ridiculous. Do you know anything about the Philadelphia region? The Lehigh Valley? If you have some made-up image of what these areas are, or if you lived in one of them at one time and left because you thought the people were mean, please don't make such strong statements. There are people on this blog trying to make decisions, and your extremely slanted statements can be misleading.

I agree completely. This forum is becoming less and less a source of valuable information for those legitimately looking for information pertaining to potential relocation. Especially when people make completely unfounded and blatantly wrong statements, it really undermines the integrity of this website and all of its forumers.

I live in central PA too, and I know what you mean

Outside of those metros in Central PA is what I meant, referring to his comment about this part of the state.

South central PA isn't depressing. It depends on what you want, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If you like outdoors, farms, and your neighbors, the rural areas of south central does just that, and for me it's wonderful. If you want a night life, museums, shops out the wazoo, and the traffic to boot, you can find that to some degree in the cities in south central PA too.

I agree with rainrock. No place I would rather be in this world than eastern PA, except possibly north central PA, and Pittsburgh is pretty nice too. Yes there are a few small towns here and there that are very depressing, so I avoid them. I drove through many such depressing towns, such as Watertown, in NY state, so PA has no monopoly on them. All in all it's a beautiful place with great temparate weather.

My roommate had a Confederate flag in the basement, and he was from New Jersey originally. I think it was more of a Lynyrd Skynyrd thing though
