I have to disagree with the people saying that the Philly "area" and SEPA is an economic wreck...that is actually far from the truth. SEPA is one of the "wealthiest" areas in the country in regards to median household income, schools, culture and entertainment. Are there some mean people? Well, yes of course, which you find in any city; stop being so sensitive. Is there crime in Philly? Yes, again as there is in any major city. Would I say that you are taking your life into your hands by going into the city? Not in the slightest. There are bad parts of the city and many nice parts to spend your time day and night. If you avoid the "bad" parts and use common sense, you should have no problems. I have lived outside Philly in the suburbs my whole life and have been in the city countless times for work, entertainment and cultural activities and not once have I encountered any crime. People complain about the traffic...well come on. All major cities have traffic problems, D.C., New York City, Charlotte just to name a few...it is life. I would recommend the Philly area to anyone who wants to experience a nice scenic place to live, with endless shopping, entertainment and culture as well as great schools, economy and safety.

What I think is depressing are all of the little towns I grew up wanting to Trout fish when I was younger have turned into crime havens. Very sad to see this happen to this commonwealth.

All in all it's a beautiful place with great temparate weather.

North Central PA is beautiful. A great place to visit, don't like living here! NO jobs / decent jobs. Minimum wage is the going rate for most employment. Business are going out and the taxes are outrageous. We live in Wellsboro and our electric bill just increased by 40% Don't get me wrong. There is little serious crime but drugs are an issue (like most every where). So to answer the original question for this thread....Is PA depressing?........IF you are headed this way.....don't forget your antidepressants

Not only is metro Philly not an economic wreck it is in fact an economic juggernaut.
Out of the top 100 wealthiest zip codes in Pennsylvania, 75 of them are in
metro Philly(Philadlephia,Montgomery,Chester,Delaware,Bu cks counties).
If you took NYC and DC out of the equation Chester County would be one of the 5 wealthiest counties in the USA, Montgomery County would be top 15 in the USA.Bucks County top 25. I generally try to refrain from blatant homerism but that guy was way off in his assessment of the Philadlephia area.

ESL teachers are always in high demand in the cities, aren't they? I know someone in the Allentown school district that was teaching ESL while going to school for her certification for same. Allentown is usually considered affordable.
In my school district, Southern Lehigh, we have an elementary school that offers Spanish Immersion for grades 1 - 5. They continue at least one class (History) through Middle School in Spanish. The class is not for native Spanish speakers, the kids just want to be fluent in Spanish. Liberty Bell Elementary We're a small district though so unless one of the teachers dies or moves away, there are not frequent openings, but who knows. We're located just South of Allentown, north of Quakertown. Starting teachers often cannot afford to live within the district on their salaries alone.

True, and Montgomery and Chester Counties are still in the top 20 or 30, among very lofty competition.
If you don't like Philadelphia, fine, but don't argue the region's economic prowess.
