I don't think I would call it not caring about history. There is just not much of it. I have been to about 5 art musuems and only 2 places that would be considered 'historic'. (although, I do plan on doing a lot more exploring this summer) One thing that does strike me is they take a lot of pride out here as being innovators, which maybe from my perspective is just being veiwed as irreverence to the past.
In PA, I remember as a kid going to a lot of history museums, the Gettysburg battlefield, seeing the liberty bell, ect.
I certainly think part of it is the fact that PA has a been around for more years, too. (MN is just celebrating its 150 years now) I do recommend if you want to live somewhere depressing, move to MN! (where they consume about 4x the anti-depressants that PA)

Of course not. If you go too slow, you might get stuck. If you keep moving, you'll be just fine.

What do you mean there is not much history in Minnesota? I mean, no, they don't have the Gettysburg battlefield or the Liberty Bell, but good grief! Their written history goes back at least to the Louisiana Purchase. The French explored the place. That is why there are so many French names there. There is a great deal of pioneer history there, also Native American history. MN has been a state since 1858. Lots of political history there, too. The Democratic Farmer-Labor Party? Hubert Humphrey and Walter Mondale, both former VPs of the US. The only thing depressing about MN is the winter, IMO. Try reading the below for a start:

Try finding some of this 'history' thats not just on a page in a history book. When I orignially brought this up, it was more in reference to the people, they don't seem to know too much about their history. (at least the people I've been in contact with) If we want to dispute facts, PA has about 4 times the amount of national landmarks than MN.
To tie all this in with the original post, the people are the reason MN is really depressing, and why I feel PA is not depressing.

This whole topic is depressing and I wish it would go away.
I love SE PA.

I live in Pittsburgh, and I'm 23 going on 24...but as someone who grew up in PA and hung out in the city since the age of 14...seeing it fall off from it's former glory is depressing. Seeing some of the prime places of my youth close where I had many memories at and having nothing replace them has just made me feel this way.
Not to mention, my family immigrated to here from other countries and the experience I have of this city and area having been to many other cities and countries around the world, this area doesn't even mean much to me. All my friends from cities in the Northeast East of here tell me this country gets very different the further west you go.
And boy...after paying attention to this election and learning about the history of this state, they were right. It has a very disgusting element to it that makes me feel very uncomfortable. I always thought to myself as a black person especially, that PA isn't racist...it's in the Northeast so it's gotta be like NYC, Philly, etc...I was very wrong.
I've already aired out my discourse in another thread...but aside from racial and class disparities, I can't deal with the backwards mentality alot of the older Pennsylvanians have and it personally makes me sick to my stomach. It also made me realize why people in my age grop (23-35) end up leaving the area and going somewhere else. I try not to let the way people run things get to me, but it's so ignorant and just obvious that there is a complete disregard to the needs of the young and minorities here that it's not even worth it for someone with my level of education and knowledge/awareness of life to stay around and deal with. MAybe some people do because they have no money and can't leave...but I always believed that being content is not a life worth living. I can't be content here. Maybe all of you can...but not me.
After this year, I'm moving and never coming back. I know that if I end up staying here, I'll never meet a woman and settle down, I'll never have a job I truly enjoy, and I'll probably end up doing something horrible with my life. I've had bad dreams about this place. If you're not a white person...Western Pa is just not for you. The history of just sheer racist discourse this areas has had and the effects it's had on America does not make me feel very "wanted" here...should I say. It's not worth it for me to wallow in a place that I feel is moving in the wrong direction just for the sake of friends and family, I have my own life that I have to live.

williamsport
I can't really say much for other areas but I recently moved to Williamsport from the west coast and find it very depressing. Besides being economically depressing this "city" is pretty much run by the thugs that move from Philly- where are the police? I look around and see 15 year old girls with babies and trash everywhere; I personally have seen 3 drug deals in my neighborhood in the past few weeks and I live in a decent house. I moved from a huge city and felt safer there than here. I am ready to move back or find a nicer area in PA.

The soul controlla,
There must be something wrong with you then cause you sound so depressing than Pa does.
Yes winter can be depressing if you do nothing but sit on your butts. There are so much in Pa. I just can not wait until we move back very soon. WE have been looking.
We work in Pgh, live in Weirton Wva, also we stay at my parents for at least one weekend a week. Either sat or sun we stay there go bowling, out to eat, go and have fun. Pgh Pa is awesome so many different life styles there.
A few of my very very close best friends have moved back to Pa from Cali, Fla, Wva you name it. Pa is a great state too. Yeah it has a few problems but know what no matter where you go, there are so much trouble.
Hey try West Virginia, Weirton to be exact, every girl on the block is on welfare, popping out babies cause Wva is a welfare state who rely on government money. Pa don't rely on government money like Wva wonder why they tax everything. I hate it so bad that I just want to scream.

You're not alone. We moved here last year and we're ready to move too. The headaches of getting our cars inspected and the roads are enough to make us not want to make it happen here. It's been said here before; it's too much work to live here.
