I saw they just reported PA's 2020 census. Westmoreland is actually 354,663. Fayette is 128,804. Westmoreland hasn't lost as many people as was estimated.

That's encouraging for Westmoreland County for sure! It looked like it was in freefall.

Did you ever make the move? I would love to hear what you did and where you ended up.

I am considering relocating to PA to retire in the next 12-18 months, or sooner, if I can find the right community. We want to be close enough to get to Pittsburgh within an 60-90 minutes or so, but most important is 5-10 acres and some hills and trees. A lake within driving distance would be icing on the cake.

I am a college professor and I teach 100% online, so I can live and work from anywhere...as long as the internet is strong! (BTW...NEVER, EVER consider Hughesnet for Internet. TERRIBLE Service and TERRIBLE Customer Service, and hidden fees and charges.)

Sounds like Somerset county is perfect for you.

60-90 from pitt, a lake near by, 5-10 acres without breaking the bank? One of the I99 communities around altoona fits that...look up bellwood PA.

That's a little further than 60-90 minutes from Pittsburgh. Google maps lists Bellwood as 1 hr 52 min (105 miles) from Pgh.

The borough of Somerset is 1 hr 6 min (69.7 miles) from Pgh.

I would suggest the southern part of Huntingdon county. You'll have to go to rural Alabama to get more conservative than that, assuming you view Trump as a conservative. Whatever, they adore him there, voting over 90% for him.

If you go way south (Neelyton), you'll be about 20 minutes from the PA turnpike. You'll also be about 30 minutes from James Buchanan State Forest where Cowans Gap state park is located... or about 50 minutes south of Raystown Lake.

It's also a place where you'll be able to afford a nice spread... or you could buy one of the large, but declining homes, and restore it to its original state.

Might look around the Hermitage area (Mercer Co.) https://www.hermitage.net https://www.visitmercercountypa.com/ https://www.mcc.co.mercer.pa.us/... Lower cost rural/farm land just outside of town, a HUGE lake very close by (Shenango River Lake) with other very large lakes close by, Pittsburgh is a very easy drive of about an hour south, 99% out of the snow-belt, Hermitage is a very popular retiree location so plenty of varied shopping, right on the PA/OH border, medical facilities in town, good internet service, and Buhl Park just waiting to be enjoyed.

https://www.buhlpark.org/

I lived there for awhile, and have lived in far worse places in PA. Good luck.

We bought a lake home with a dock on Treasure Lake in DuBois that will eventually (1.5 to 3.5 years) be our forever retirement home. We love the area and have been so thrilled with our visits up there. My wife is from Clearfield County, so she already knew quite a bit about the area.

I love that PA is retirement income friendly as I'll have a pension along with SS or a SS supplement when I retire.

We pay $45 a month (bought my own modem/router) for 100 GB cable internet through Zito at the lake. It's been great with our Ring cameras connected to it 24/7 since we closed last November.

Never been to Bellefonte so we will check out that area for sure. As we have a month to find our rental for the first year, I welcome the advice that helps to zero in on a starting point. I am not to keen on the State Collage area per say, but it is centrally located with an abundant amount of rentals and all the stores you could need for starting over as we are selling all our furnishings and starting fresh.

Also, because we want to rent the first year and road-trip around PA to see the different areas, being centrally situated makes just about every part of the state within 2.5 to 3 hours drive away. So we could literally drop the 6th grader off at school, drive to ________, look around, have lunch and then come back to pick up the kid and get ready for supper. As we have already decided on not living in a metro area.. big cities with the big city problems wont be on our itinerary.

This ^ in May of 2021 is the posters last post on this site. People can, of course, continue to post, but I wouldn't assume Homer Bound is listening.
