When I asked her how that compares to Atglen/Christiana/Parkesburg area (Octorara SD) she said that Lancaster city is more liberal than those areas while Lancaster county is more conservative.

So based on that I'd assume that the city itself is actually nice and perhaps more open, but as soon as you go to those burbs of Penn Manor or Lititz it's a completely different landscape.

So.. can anybody comment on that? Would be much appreciated. She spent a lot of time in Boston which is quite liberal, as well as Philadelphia, so I trust her judgment on that, but would also like some of your opinions.
That sums it up..If you are Black, Hispanic, Indian or other person of color, you will never have a problem being accepted in the City of Lancaster itself. Additionally, the "fringes" of the city such as Park City, the outlets. Lincoln HWY, etc aren't bad.

I have an southern accent and have been here approx. 3 plus yrs. and whenever i talk to anyone they immediately say....your not from around here are you.....DUH,,,,,,they make fun of my accent and immediately push away from you. I was even introduced to my bosses family at the xmas party as this is (-----) the one with the strange southern accent. HOW RUDE,,,as least down south we accept people with any type of accent and know how to be friendly.
I hope your situation is different than mine and your family is accepted more readily than I was and am.
I'm really, really sorry you were treated this way. It's one thing if you were a bad or unpleasant person, but to be pre-judged like this without even being given a chance is inexcusable.

I'm from the South, but don't have an accent. However, I have dealt with what you have. On the contrary, there ARE some great people around here. They are simply hard to come across.

My wife and I are seriously contemplating moving back South after we retire, which is a long way off.

How is crime in Lancaster nowadays? Are there - and if so, which - places you typically don't want to go, especially at night?

according to city data, the overall crime index in 2000 was 625, in 2010 it was 519.
http://www.city-data.com/city/Lancas...nsylvania.html

2010 was a big year for rapes, almost doubling from the year before, but outside that, the big thing that jumps out is robberies per 100k dropped from 619 to 385, auto thefts also dropped from 535 to 205

Thanks guys

I was reading through this thread more and more and basically I'm completely lost - I'm gonna be going to HACC next year and I honestly don't know what to expect from this town any more - half the people will say it's awful, ignorantville etc. etc. and others will say it's not as bad as it's painted out to be.

I have lived past 6 years in Atglen so it's not too far away, but obviously it is a little different. Any advice on whether I'll have any chance of making any friends?

a lot of people complaining seem to live in the county as opposed to the city

on the west side of Lancaster City, we have Colombia, the South American country, in the form of El Maizal, tucked away in what used to be a grocery store at 306 N. Mulberry St. It's a little slice of home cooking, Latin-style, and while this charming place is tiny, the portions are not. You will eat well here.
..Bandeja Paisa ($10.50) is a testament to that.
It's a soothing dish of white rice, beans, finely ground beef, pork sausage, a fried egg and sweet plantain, rounded off with a grilled corn dough patty. "This is the best!" Gloria Velasco says, and she could well be right. Add a side of empanadas for $1.25 -- fried turnovers filled with meat and potatoes -- and that makes things even better.
