We went to the local park for the annual remembrance service. It was sad to see that all the vets doing the flag ceremony looked over seventy years old. I guess younger vets don't feel they have anything in common with the older VFW members so don't join. Nevertheless, there was a good turnout and I felt a lump in my throat when the flag was raised and the HS band played the star spangled banner as we all tried to reach the high notes.

My son is in the band and before we got to the park, I told him that when he started to sweat in the hot sun to just think of the soldiers who didn't just sit in the hot sun but fought in full uniform all over the world. It's so easy to think of memorial day as a day off and a kick off for the summer, but good to remember that there's a reason for celebrating.
