Moving to Lancaster Can you Help?
My husband is retiring and wants to leave the high cost of Long Island.
We we in Lancaster last summer and he really likes it there. Can you tell me
about Manheim Township and what is the best school district in Pa.
We will have a High School age child by then and I want an excellent school.
What about Lancaster Catholic High School any remarks.

Hi where on Long Island are you? We are originally from Huntington , now we live in Vegas. We are also considering a move to Lancaster, but we are split between moving there or Raleigh NC.
I'm not all that much help, hopefully others will be. I could be wrong, but i have heard from many people that the locals in Manheim and most if not all of Lancaster County are not so warm to outsiders. People always say the " New Yorkers " are rude or mean, but as you know that could be anywhere. I'm living here in Las Vegas where the crime is high and the pace is incredibly high, yet the neighbors and people are nice. My 26 years living on Long Island i never had a problem with the New Yorkers and my family always welcomed outsiders nomatter where they came from.
Lets hope the people of Lancaster county have a heart and welcome everybody instead of being the opposite.
Good luck, oh by the way. We did visit Manheim, the area looks nice, i guess affordable. We are a young couple , we are worried about the job market there.
Keep in touch

The Manheim Township SD is considered "the best" in this area. It has the wealthiest folks in the area in its tax base, so the kids are good, motivated, and parents are involved. They routinely score the highest on the tests here, but they have all the advantages, so that's a given.
Having taught in Catholic schools, I am partial to them. PA (like everywhere else) has really succumed to the NCLB Law- with its focus on scores, not learning. That's a whole other can of worms, but LCHS is excellent. It depends on what you want for your child- a private/religious education, or a public school education. Manheim Township has great schools, though. Please note that the town of Manheim is not where MT schools are. They would be a Lancaster address. When you talk to a realtor, please tell them you want Manheim Township- not Manheim Central SD.
I've complained about the locals in this area, b/c, honestly, I have never been in a place where people are simply this rude and cold. >shrugs> It's here, and you cope. There are many folks here from NY/NJ, seeking paradise. This area has a lot to offer- shopping, relative low crime, good public schools, access to major cities. I would spend more than a weekend in Intercourse, looking at the charming countryside, before deciding to move here, though.

Thanks for that helpful info, but i'm a bit confused on your post. Can you please answer these questions? Are Manheim Central Public schools a good school district? Education wise and safety? Or is that a high crime area? Because more then one person told me to avoid that school.
Where are you originally from?
And why do you feel the people there are cold? Whats their problem? Fear? Insecure? I currently live in Las Vegas , and the original locals are not crazy about the growth, yet they are very nice to outsiders.
And my last question is -- What did you mean by this? ---I would spend more than a weekend in Intercourse, looking at the charming countryside, before deciding to move here, though.[/quote] , whats up with intercourse?
Thanks, hope to hear from you.

Thank you for the information. I have heard that Manheim Township is the
best school district. Like everyone taxes are an important issue. I am partial
to Catholic Education being a product of one and also having one child
complete a Catholic HS in NY and doing so well in College. I see the difference having a child attend both types of schools. I would appreicate
any other info on Lancaster Catholic HS that you can offer.

I think the best thing for anyone who is considering moving to Lancaster County is to walk the towns and try to interact with the residents. Skip the tourist attractions. Take time to visit the small shops in the town that you're considering moving to. Attend parades and local events and try to get the feel of the people. Sure, no one actually knows what your potential neighbors will be like until you live there, but this might be a better idea then hitting the outlets and driving through the county.
