Any Nice Areas Around Lancaster PA
My husband has a job interview in Lancaster. I read on this forum that the folks in that area aren't real friendly. We have one child who we plan on homeschooling. My husband would like a commute that is no more then half an hour away. Are there any nice areas to raise a family outside of Lancaster?

Lancaster is known for Amish people. Granted, they make up a small % of Lancaster County's population, but I can't say I have an image of that county as being unfriendly.

The city of Lancaster has a number of safe, pleasant neighborhoods. I like East Pete, East Hempfield and areas south of the city. The nicest people I've met since I've been here are from Manheim. Friendly, down to earth and caring. Not a fan of the people of Lititz.

More Questions
Thank you for the responses. I am just beginning to research the area. There just seems to be quite a bit of negative things said about the area in these forums. I'm sure everyone has their positive or negative experiences in any area. I guess it also depends on what lifestyle you are looking for. I don't think we would want to live in the city, although I have never been to the city of Lancaster. I have been to Lititz many years ago. I don't remember alot about it except that it seemed flat and rural.
We would actually like some land so that we can do some gardening. Maybe have some animals besides the two cats we have now. I would still like to be close enough to where we could get to museums, any cultural/local events, concerts etc. We grew up in Maine so we are used to the cold weather. We have had trouble adjusting to the humidity down south where we are now. How is the humidity there? Also what is the housing market like there now? Also the communities you mentioned are they within a 30 minute drive to the city of Lancaster?

Just came back
My family & I just came back from vacationing if Lancaster & if there is anything you can say about the people there, it is that they are the friendliest & nicest people I have ever met. We are currently in FL & will be relocating to PA hopefully sometime next year. Some of the areas we looked at were: Sinking Springs, Wyommissing(which are in Berks County), and Womelsdorf. They are all beautiful areas & everything is so clean. The air is fresh & the scenery is gorgeous.

I lived in Lancaster County, Centerville Area which is not far from Park City Mall, for several years. It was a nice place to live and work. However, I did find people in Lancaster to be somewhat reserved, especially if you're not a native. It is hot and humid in the summer and there is still a lot of farming in the areas so a lot of dust and pollen.

It can be hot and humid, AC is usually a must. Other days during the summer are pleasant and having the windows open is a joy. There are many townships just outside the city limits (some of them still have a Lancaster mailing address) that would still get your husband under the 30 minute commute. Try Manheim Twp., Hempfield, and the area slightly southwest (near Millersville University). Housing prices are all over the spectrum~and have stayed pretty steady or declined slightly this past year. Overall southcentral PA is a pleasant place to live. If you are homeschooling, there is a huge network of homeschooling parents and groups in most of the communities.
