Actually it takes quite a bit of abuse from the rest of the state and on this forum. Some of the abuse justified e.g. crime, poverty, shady politicians, philadlephia public system being a drain on the state budget etc. etc. There are issues that need to be addressed and they are being addressed within the city, region, state.
The problem Philadlephians seem to have in regards to the rest of the state is that the abuse is very rarely symmetrically balanced by praise for what are truly world class aspects of the city and region. For example 9 of the 10 top grossing restaurants in the state are in center City Philadlephia. Arguably the top 10 cultural institutions in the state are all located in Center City. There are a dozen musical venues you can patronize on a nightly basis just in Center City. We hear that the Philadlephia suburbs are overrated and entirely too expensive but they are not overrated and there is a reason the cost of living is fairly high in Chester,Bucks,Montgoemery,Delaware Counties. Take out the Federal Income Taxes Pot of Gold homebase of NO Va./Md and metro NYC then suburban Philly is arguably the wealthiest sustained collection of counties in the country.
Most of us can handle the one sided criticism and I understand the vocal minority does not speak for all. Perhaps if the condemnation was offset with acclaim every so often Philadlephia area residents wouldnt be so guarded in regards to the rest of the state.
With the near comical biasness towards Philly by a couple of characters on this board you can't do anything but laugh at them.

Growing up in the the Burgh, I never heard anyone EVER mention Philly. I seen one guy from Philly post a comment about Pittsburgh. Something like " Pittsburgh's thought about in the terms of our football team, like Green Bay is" Then, he went on to say something like "Ya, I took a vacation in Denver last yr, isnt Pittsburgh close to there"? Are the public schools that bad in Philly? A city like Pittsburgh, with ALL it's rich HISTORY, and at one time, IMPORTANCE on the WORLD stage, 3 pro sports teams (5 Super Bowl Rings I may add), he dont dont know where it's located? Id tell that guy from Philly " Guess u dont travel that much, huh"? I love people who act like they dont know a place exist, cause their worried that they might not look as "cosmopoliton" or "sophisticated". U aint too "WORLDLY" in my eyes, if u dont even know the the other major city in your OWN state. I'd then tell the guy, "Dont worry about not travelling alot, you're just like alot of Pittsburghers I know". Watch his face distort. My man, u cant have it both ways you see, your either WORLDLY or YOU'RE not. You either know something, been there, done that, or U havent. Who looks like a hick now? By the way, alot of NYC'ers think about Philly, like Philly thinks about Pittsburghers. Oh God do they get mad about that!

My mother-in-law was visiting yesterday. She grew up in Messmore (sp?), somewhere south of Pittsburgh. She was a coal miners daughter and grew up VERY poor. She told me that the state was almost divided in half. They basically knew nothing about the Philly area, and never visited there. She lives outside of Houston now.
My husband and I are planning to move to the Reading area (Wyomissing) and I told her we are flying into Philly to visit sometime next year - she told me to wear a bullet-proof vest.
I also live outside of Houston, which has a somewhat high crime rate, but I am not afraid to go downtown; well, maybe at night....
Is Philadelphia really that bad, crime wise? I do plan on submersing my children in all the wonderful history in that area.
Anyway, just thought it was weird that she has such a strong dislike of that area - personally, I can't wait to get there!

No offense, your Mom is probably a great person, but why would you take her opinion if she never been there. It sounds like she describes Philly like people who think Pittsburgh is full of smoke stacks and hicks with mullets.
Philly is safe in Center city and many of its neighborhoods. It is a beautiful city rich with history (most of it the most important to this country). It will be a big difference from Houston, but it is not like you are travelling to Baghdad. Philly is a must see city. It gets a bad rap since there are many murders there. Every city's muder rate goes through cycles.

That's what I figured. Mother-in-laws, what can you do with them?
Well, my husband and I are very excited about the move. Who knows, maybe she won't come to visit us that much, she will be too afraid too!

I find it interesting that someone mentioned Philly being given to NJ by the rest of the state, as if. I think a more accurate statement might be that Philly wants to secede to NJ. Are you really under the impression we have anything in common with the rest of this godforsaken backwards state? Plus we love paying taxes to the state that we see pennies on the dollar in return on...and in return the state can barely be bothered to maintain our roads, provide adequate funding for public transit or public schools.

The basic idea is that it would raise the average IQ of both states.
