I've tried to look this up, and it looks like GDP is not determined by county -- just state and MSA. I think that's indication enough that, even though Philadelphia County's population proportion probably falls short of the proportion of GDP provided to the state economy, there are LOTS of suburbanites that make hefty salaries in the city that get counted into the GDP totals of suburban counties. Thus, the "metro area" measure is really the only fair way to determine the role that Philadelphia plays in our state economy insofar as it is a major center of employment for people outside the city limits.

Based on current Census estimates:
Montgomery: 795,000
Bucks: 621,342
Delaware: 555,000
Chester: 482,112
Philadelphia: 1,448,394
Total: 3,901,848
% of Pennsylvania pop. total (12,400,000): 31.5
THUS, in the Pennsylvania portion of the Philadelphia Metropolitan Area, 31.5% of the state's population accounts for 42% of the total state economic output. That's quite the contrary to being an economic "drag."

The overwhelming majority of the Pennsylvania economy is driven by the Philadelphia and Pittsburgh metros.....That means the REAL Pennsylvania is Philadelphia and Pittsburgh....I say the metros cut the rest of the state loose and make Pennsyltucky the offical 51th state.

Well what is real to one person is surreal to another. While I agree that the population and economics are vastly driven by Philly and Pittsburgh, the diversity of PA is what makes it interesting. Pennsyltucky. LOL, love it.

LOL, Brother Ismael dont you have a barn to raise or something?
The 4 wealthiest counties in Pennsylvania all owe their origin to Philadelphia.3 of the 4 share a border with Philadelphia.
Pa avg. household income(2004)=$43,714
Chester County-$69,904
Montgomery- $65,889
Bucks- $64,696
Delaware-$51,287
If you give Philly away Chester,Bucks,Montgomery, and Delaware counties go with it.You also lose 75 of the states 100 wealthiest zip codes.80 colleges/universities/institutions of higher learning.28 Fortune 500 companies. The 3rd biggest downtown in the usa. The 4th rated cultural city in the USA and Arguably the best historic area in the country.

What a great post! Spot on. Plus the last championship by a Philly team was Villanova, my undergrad alma mater. Can't give Nova away!

You know what they say in Philly. A murder a day keeps the doctors away

Let's get real, folks.

Well Philly has the highest murder rate outside of New Orleans. Also has the highest murder rate in nearly 20 years.

Incorrect -- the facts speak otherwise. Note the Top 10 per 100,000. Philadelphia doesn't appear:
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...3/combo717.jpg
2008 murders down about 22% from last year.
