Phila is great!
A marvelous city full of history and culture, great restaurants, quaint neighborhoods and yes, not so nice neighborhoods but as cities go, we have enjoyed going to Phila for 30 years to visit, I lived there for 10 and although I'm not fond of living in a city that size, it's a great place to visit, and has something for everyone. You have to exercise caution in any large city, know where you're going, where not to go, stay alert and do your homework about where to stay and how to stay safe, having said that, we've never had a bad experience in Phila, it's always been a great time.

rainrock, I admire your persistence, but showing pics of a bunch of people in Philadelphia is not gonna sway nor convince us that Philly is any better than it really is.

Persistence lol? I dont live in Philadelphia and really have no motive to provide Philadelphia with undo praise. I'm simply trying to educate the ignorant.Pictures dont lie. Center City Philadlephia might be the best 100,000 person neighborhood in the country, its specatacular. You could combine downtown Pittsburgh,State College,Harrisburg,Scranton,Allentown,Erie and all of the quaint towns surrounding Philaldephia and they still wont be able to hold a candle to Center City Philly. Its a very complex city that has neighborhoods that would absolutely blow your mind if you knew about them or had the chance to experience them.
Not attempting to sway, rather educate.

I get a kick out of these individuals who talk about how exquisite Bellefonte, State College, Gettysburg,York etc etc are. Philadlephia has single neighborhoods that no one has ever heard about that would blow the headlights of the entire towns of those places. Thats not to discredit those towns but thats the reality of it.

A lot of my dad's family lives south of Pittsburgh, and from what I hear (or heard several yrs ago) is that Philadelphia was where a good bit of state funds went, while other areas (with the exception of perhaps Lancaster and Harrisburg) were left out.

Great pictures Rainrock!
Your pictures are beautiful, it really captures the diversity of Phila, it's so much more than a center city and crime, I would bet that the nay sayers on this blog have never even been in Phila to visit. It is the seat of democracy and has such rich history, it's hard to imagine even comparing Phila to other large cities that have had no roll in the birth of our nation. Touring the historical national park is awesome and sobering, Phila had the first surgical amphitheatre, and a lot of other firsts. Thanks for making my day. Makes me want to go for a visit, Phila Deli on South Street makes the best turkey clubs for breakfast by the way! For those of you who are doubtful, go to the Holiday Inn [decent rates, OK hotel, right next to historic park, on site parking] for a long weekend and at least tour the historical areas, Independence Hall, the new interactive facilities built to outline the historical time lines and if you have children, they'll love it too, it's very family friendly.
