Hello,

We just moved to Reading and are trying to furnish a big apartment ... can anyone recommend new or used furniture stores in the area that sell good quality items? We can't afford anything too high-end, but we would like something nicer than the build-it-yourself Ikea furniture. ;-) We don't have access to a truck, which kinda rules out buying stuff off Craig's list.

Specifically we're looking for bookshelves, tables, a desk, nightstand, etc.

Thanks!
hm

Unclaimed Freight on 5th St. Highway, just north of the city and Fairgrounds Square Mall or Boscov's at Berkshire or Fairgrounds Square Mall, or Reading Mall in Exeter Township. You may find stuff at the JC Penney outlet too, in the Fairgrounds mall, upstairs in the "catalog return" center.

There are a number of used furniture stores in the city. I can think of a few: 10th & Penn across from the elementary school on 10th, 6th & Walnut at the corner across from the St. Joe's Community General Campus and there is another on Lancaster Avenue just south of route 625 near the AW Golden Chevrolet dealership.

Thanks for the recommendations! In case anyone else finds this thread useful ... We found most of what we wanted at Unclaimed Freight on 5th St. Hwy. and The Furniture Store (used/new) in Shillington. Conover Furniture in Sinking Spring had a beautiful showroom, but a long wait for wood furniture and no delivery service.

Would also welcome recommendations of general thrift/consignment stores, as we'll be needing lots of smaller household items. Thanks!

There's a place that I see small household items in Exeter Township. I don't recall the name, but it's on Perkiomen Avenue, across from the Gun Gallery @ St. Lawrence Ave. (building next to McDonald's).

There's a Goodwill on Lancaster Ave., and one on 5th St. in the Kmart shopping center.

happimedium,

Here is a store that we really like: Peaceful Valley Amish Furniture at 3347 Old Philadelphia Pike, Intercourse, PA. Their phone number is 717- 768-0216.
It is a little bit of a ride for you. However; it is worth the trip and Intercourse if a very interesting town to visit - you could find quilts or home made Amish cooking. We drive there from above Stroudsburg for furniture - we also have driven to the Maine State Prison Store for their furniture.

I used to work for a furniture store many years ago. We would buy a chair for $50 and sell it for $125. You double the cost and add shipping and handling. Perhaps the rules have changed over the years? I know that they have overhead - that chair can sit for years before it is sold. However, I am suggesting that; most stores have plenty of room for you to haggle. If you have the luxury of talking to one of the shop owners; don’t be afraid to try to talk them down in price. Turn your back and start to walk out; if necessary.
