Familymom, I'm in upstate NY, but looking at Pennsylvania. Not sure which state you are inquiring about, or both, or other states also, but in NY you can look into the Oakridge area of Saratoga, Sterling further downsate, just to name 2. In PA, I just hit llzpa's link which brought me to Charter's website. You can also google "planned communities in XYZ state" that will give you a lot of info. I like the concept because it offers diversity of price range & home styles, so the community will have a mix of families, "dinks" (dual income, no kids - lol), empty nesters, singles in townhomes, etc. Just my opinion, but if you are considering Pa - great! If you are considering NY, keep your checkbook handy cuz the taxes will smother you. It's a shame, since NY really is pretty & has a lot to offer. But I digress I hope to find out if PA has a better cost of living than NY.

Little late on this, I would recommend Selinsgrove, Pleasant Gap, Bellefonte, Northumberland. Shamokin Dam, Danville, Bloomsburg, New Hope, and Lewisburg as nice places to move. Some of these areas sometimes can be hard to gain certain types of jobs but think they have nice atmospheres and good places in PA to live.

I would put in a solid vote for the bustling and beautiful Carlisle area. It is historic, scenic, and full of great shops with a variety of decent restaurants. It has everything you'd need, is near several fantastic getaways, the only downside being that it is small enough to not yet have the vast array of late night entertainment options normally available in mid-to-big cities. Here is a great link to lots of shops in Carlisle. I have lots of photos, but not too many have been uploaded yet. Here are a few for your enjoyment:

I know this is the PA forum, but if you want to see the result of thirty years worth of active revitalization on a Main Street, check out this thread of photos from my hometown.

Skyliner, I have already seen those pictures and would love to visit. It looks like a gorgeous renovation and a great town to live in. I envy you. I would have to leave my husband in NJ because he will not move south of Maryland, too hot for him. Also the County Prison in Carlisle, is it active or just a tourist stop now?

Hi! I'm researching for a future purchase of a vacation/retirement home. I came upon a lakefront that borders on the Prompton State Park. I have not ventured anywhere near Prompton, but would like any information or feedback at all about the area before I make an appointment to see the property. Thank You Dee
