South Central PA.
you may want to look at Annville PA in Lebanon County. Another area that people like to North Lebanon area in the Jonestown / fredericksburg area. It has easy access to route 81 and 78 which makes the drive to Hershey decent. The Palmyra area is also great.
If you want to be clocer to Family you may want to consider Lancaster County. althought if you want to stay within 30 minutes to Hershey may I suggest Elizabethtown, Mount Joy or maybe the Manheim area, from these towns you will have easy access to route 283 leading to Hershye/Harrisburg or Reading

people always say how conservative harrisburg is. they have the most diverse population in the state after philly and pittsburgh. they have a very large gay comminity, 3 mosques, many sysagogues and tons and tons of immigrants from all over the world. its kind of true that many people wont welcome you with open arms. but if you live here, work hard and obey all the laws people will come to accept you no matter what.
people who say this area is bible thumping and conservative are *SURE* not from this area.

Well, there are people that moved from this area, like to California or New York and like to bash it for being so conservative. Hello, you live in New York, the liberal capital of the country...of course Harrisburg is going to be conservative in comparison! You just simply can't compare the area to a much larger metro.

I was born and raised in the Harrisburg area. I moved to Dallas, TX 30 years ago, and would love to move back to PA. Not only to be close to my family again, but I miss the beauty of PA. The mountains, rivers and farm lands can't be beat. And... you are close to the ocean, too.

No! Don't do it! Don't come to Harrisburg! Worst schools in the state, and for sure the worst place I've ever lived. I hate it here so so much and can't wait until my lease is up. I'll never even come back to visit. Ugh.

Um...yes we are. Born and raised. It's absolutely one of the most conservative areas I've ever lived in, even moreso than GA, which is where I live now. Most everyone outside of Harrisburg proper is Republican and staunchly so. It's not very open minded nor does it have much of a cultural base. However, the area is VASTLY improved over what it was ten years ago. The reason we have the 'most diverse after philly and pittsburgh' is well...because it's the only other 'city'. But there's no comparison. Philly and Pitts are at least three times the size.

Considering areas outside of Harrisburg such as Susquehanna and Lower Paxton Township (verrrrry suburban) voted for Obama, I'd hardly call them staunchly Republican. Susquehanna township also just voted in a Democratic majority to the commissioners and row offices.
Penbrook and Susquehanna township (also Lower Paxton and increasingly Swatara) are pretty darn diverse, definitely comparing to the suburbs of Philly. However, it's just a much smaller total amount of people, obviously.
