One striking feature of small town PA is almost everywhere that I have looked there were significantly more women than men, sometimes up to 10%. This is huge. Did coal kill them off?

At least from my perspective looking for a decent, fit, employed, educated gen x/gen y single girl is all but impossible up here in the PA mountains. Probably the only drawback I've seen so far living here. About the only women around are over 65 or 18 and barefoot and pregnant with their second child. Any in their 20's are on their way to a mobility scooter by their 30's due to excessive Oreo munching. Scary. Looks like I'll be traveling hundreds of miles to go on dates. Even a russian catalog marriage is looking tempting now.

I don't know where the heck you're living, but here in the Lancaster area, single, attractive, and educated 20-something females are few and far between. On a typical night out there's 4-5 dudes for every girl, if not more. The women here are average at best but think they're god's gift to earth because so many guys will hit on them just because there's no better stock around. Along side this, there's a general attitude that if you haven't grown up in Lancaster nobody really wants to take the time to establish a new friendship. Lots of cliques; it's as if like nobody matured past the high school mentality. Myself and many of the single guys I know straight up leave the county if not state on weekends partly because of this.

I am not saying this based on personal experience. My dating years are behind me. I am just looking at demographic data.

On the whole, the eastern half of the US has a lesser male to female ratio. I'm not sure why though. But it does seem to balance out the west which has more males.

I know that in central PA around centre county and some neighboring counties there have more males vs females. That probably has to do with Penn State being a big jock school.

In the stats you were looking at, did you notice if the median age was higher than the average? My guess for small towns is that they have an older population (since most young people go off to college and get jobs in the cities), and women have a higher life expectancy than men which tips the gender ratio in their direction.

I see plenty of men...just none of them single and willing to date an over-worked night shift Paramedic with a little bit more to love! lol

It has something to do with the military. For instance, I found out that Seattle actually had more Black males than females. That is very, very rare in this country. What I also realize is that Seattle has an Army base and big Air Force Base close by, along with a big naval Base in nearby Bremerton. think about San Diego too. Big Marine and Navy presence in that city, with some other military bases close by. LA has it's sare of military bases close by too. There is an Air Force Base by Las Vegas. Same with Phoenix and Tucson, which also has an Army base within an hour. Do you see a pattern? Albuquerque has an Air Force Base in it's area. Salt Lake City as well. One is close to Boise. So, I think that at least has something to do with it when considering how many more men than women are in the military.

Also, around 51% of the nation's population is female.

I totally agree. I haven't been able to find a decent one yet. It does seems every girl I meet already has two kids by the age of 25. They have never been married and their ex-boyfriend was a cheating drunk who walked out on them. It seems like a trend up here in NEPA. But then again it might be like that in other areas also. It may just be a sign of our decaying society.
