Default Questions about york, pa and surrounding area

Ok so i've been offered a job opportunity out in york and have a few questions i'm hoping some people can answer.

One major question/concern i have is the gay scene. Yes i'm a lesbian, that being said i was wondering if anyone can fill me in on the culture out in york or the surrounding areas. Is york a good place to call home or maybe should i just commute to work and live elsewhere? Any info on the social scene and those things would be most helpful : ) i'm 30yrs old and not a huge club/bar goer but having the option is always a plus.

Thanks!!

Sharky,

York is a very conservative area, as I'm sure you've been made aware of by now. From my own personal observations, it is progressively, but slowly accepting and much moreso now than when I first moved here 20 years ago. I have gay friends in York and they seem to be content and have not experienced any problems. Now, they probably could not be as open in York about their sexuality as let's say they could be in Dupont Circle in DC, New York or Philly, but on the same token they have not encountered any overt harrassment either. York has come quite a ways, but there is still a long way to go.

There is a club called the Velvet Rope located on the NW edge of the city that caters exclusively to gays and lesbians and has different events throught the week. I am not familiar with Harrisburg's G&L scene, but I know there are more gay bars and clubs there than York and it's a bit more accepting. Naturally, Baltimore has a much more active G&L scene and is only an hour's drive away.

I also believe the Unitarian Church of York has quite a few gay members in it's congregation and is very welcoming. I do think the church has a GLBT group or has connections to one in the area..I'm not too sure.

Good luck in your decision, and welcome to the area!

Gil

You would find York to be a comfortable community in which to live. We have 2 families in our neighborhood of 'suburbia' with same sex partners. They are active, visible and accepted by all of the neighbors. Just from my line of work and living in York, I know many professional women and men who have established long term relationships or partnerships, and they are respected for their highly visible careers and their contributions to the community, their lifestyles are not an issue.
