Default Abandoned Turnpike picture

Saturdayskid, what a great shot, had no idea that road even existed, where is it and how long does it extend? More pics? PA is really a beautiful state to drive around in, all factors included I vote for Rt 11/15 from Selingsgrove to Harrisburg. The newer 4 lane divided highway along the Susquehanna River valley is awesome, love to see the cranes, and bald eagles, the combination of vast expanses of water and mountains offers different views of color and context daily, love it. Rt 11 up to Northumberland is fun when crossing lake Augusta, usually see speed boats, people water skiing, house boats, fishermen, and in the early morning, they practice olympic style rowing. You can get lost in your thoughts and pretend you're somewhere else which is helpful when you're driving to work on Monday! Too bad it sounds like Sunbury is losing it's 2 million dollar grant to develop the river front there because of lack of planning and matching funds.

Loved driving it from Pitt to Philly, it takes you by the old historic abandoned PA Turnpike
It goes by tons of small attractions in this state. It's hard not to like it so much.
I like 30 too.. Pittsburgh, appalacian mountains, gettysburg, lancaster, etc... nice drive, very scenic.

Yeah, I didn't take the picture (or I would have more interesting shots haha)

but it bypasses some really cool oddities, and shoots all the way across the state to NJ and to Cali. It's a big (and probably most important) part of Americas first route that spanned the country, the Lincoln Highway.

Here is a large (unlabeled) map detailing where it goes:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...0_(PA)_map.png

I usually drive it towards and into Ohio during the summertime, to visit my favorite small Ohio towns.

Driving the other way, east towards NJ, it was a VERY pleasant surprise to randomly stumbleupon gettsyburgh. I drove 30 to NJ, knowing nothing other than "This gets to New Jersey" and it passed through Gettysburgh and Lancaster and a few other very interesting places.

"Mr Eds Elephant Museum/Candy Museum" was my favorite. (Other than the abandoned turnpike, which may be easy to miss, but it's there, be on the lookout)

Traveling this way, you get to climb very foggy mountains, which is also interesting.

It also passes this:

PA 34-Newport to Mt. Holly Springs, and some of the side roads.
The 66/666/62 complex through the ANF, Kane to Port Allegheny, through my hometown Smethport. Go to Potato City on Rt. 6. Eastern end of Tioga county.
Include Kinzua Dam in your drive.
Parts of I-80.
US 322, Franklin to State College.
PA 949 Corsica to Sigel, then 36 to Tionesta, hit Cook Forest. Go to Fisher.
Rt. 28 Brookville to Ridgeway.

Don't be fooled by my "Beach" name, been there too long but still need PA to recharge the batteries and remind me that not everyone is shallow, callow and full of themselves. It's been a bad day dealing with idiots. Carry on.

I drove rt. 30 last summer and was really struck by all of the history, the beauty, and how different it is compared to northern PA,. The scenery and architecture feels very southern, while northern PA feels very New Englandy in comparison.
