Default Thanks cid

I'm glad you brought it back from the dead. I grew up in WC and was so glad to see those photos! I spent soooo many hours at the West Chester Library when I was little, and loved those red bricks in front with all the names on them. I also attended East High School and felt I got a very good education there, as well as at West Chester University. This town can't be beat. I love just walking around town (something you can actually do in WC) and looking at all the different architecture from the past 250 years, some of it all in one downtown block! Those photos of the bank, houses down by the college, etc were great!
I don't have kids, but I wouldn't hesitate for a minute to raise them there! Look at me, I turned out just fine!

Default Stunned I'm sure

I don't live in West Chester, nor have I ever but frankly I was stunned to hear it described in such a negative manner. Part of the problem is that as mentioned you were looking at the town in the dead of winter and uh yes they do roadwork in the winter here.

I also feel that you are not giving us anything to enable us to give you informed information. You don't tell us where you are coming from, what you are looking for or how much you plan to pay. Because of this you are getting recommendations of areas that are moderately priced (by those areas standards) to one of the most expensive real estate addresses in the country.

What I would say is give us a little more information and people can give you a much better idea of negatives and positives. You need to be aware of real estate taxes etc. as you hunt for housing. I wouldn't worry about the school Districts yet. Yes Great Valley is excellent as are all the other school districts in that geographical area.

"Bad part of town" has to be taken into the correct context. West Chester is a small town, compared to your avg city West Chester has no truly bad parts of town. That being said the NW part of town heading towards Downingtown Pike is a little more diverse and not quite as well kept as the downtown and college areas.

Good luck

you can live anywhere in west chester really, but there are still some parts that you may feel cautious about walking around in at like 2:00 at night... like on matlack walking towards the bars past linden street, by sams pizza island, maybe by the community center... but i mean, ive walked home from west chester going through all these places at the middle of the night and never had any problems. during the day you have nothing to worry about EVER in west chester. during the night, there is just the thought that creeps into your mind. ive never known anyone who has been a victim of violence through mugging when they were just an innocent person. i know people who are victims because of drug related activities - aka the very few people who get shot in west chester, i think less than 1 per year, always are involved in drug trade... and usually people from coatesville are coming to west chester to do stuff like that not people who live in the borough.
