Hate to always sound negative, howellnj, but we never anticipated the attitudes that exist here. Funny thing is that I was born in a small town in Central Jersey and can remember the wonderful atmosphere there. All I hoped to do here was to feel that way again and it didn't happen. The people here read the papers and hear the news and label out-of-towners as violent threats to their way of life. They especially don't like people from Philly, Jersey or New York, but they don't mind taking your money. Besides the coldness they backstab and gossip like school kids. You really can't trust anyone out here at all. And if you apply for a job you better have graduated from Penn State or Millersville or you can forget it. By the way, some of the school systems are overrated. Best of luck with your decision.

Default Not moving!

Thank you so much !!! I dont' think my family will be moving here. First of all the things I told you about before from my previous thread and from what you had just said. I have a daughter 11yrs old and would NEVER have her go through the attitudes from kids like that. Yeah I grew up in a small town also I was able to walk everywhere I loved it.
Thanks again for your response OH! before I forget have you ever considered moving yourself?

Good luck!

My husband and I have been visiting Lancaster for the last 2 yrs. We have visited a total of 5 times. We have done all the sightseeing there is, and have been to see all the shows, and have also ejoyed the city's best restaurants.
We absolutely love this city, and have made a lot of friends there as well. It's really lovely to stop into the stores and hug people whom we've met, and also to go out with some of our very dear friends. It's also great to keep the communication rolling when we get back to the city.
I too, am thinking of buying a home there at some point in time, so we can go back and forth, as we do not plan on leaving NYC till we retire in another 20 yrs.

Our only problem is that we usually spend a total of 7 days when we visit, and hotel is very expensive, so I would love to get a home to rent.
Any local ideas?

Lancaster is nice, but shootings have been on the rise. Everybody says we're so cold to outsiders (?). Well you have to act like a neighbor to be treated like a neighbor. We're not all cold to newcomers, that's more of a Mennonite influence. Suburbs like Ephrata, New Holland, Brownstown and Leola are nice places to live.

Default Lancaster pa

I believe shootings are likely on the rise in many places in the U.S., poor economy right now and a horrible influx of Illegal's. Plus bad parents, that's the main cause. I cant say much for Lancaster County because I don't live there, but when I was there last October the county seemed very nice in my opinion. Some locals did have that negative attitude, but ignore that, people like that wont go far in life, they are not happy with their life so they feel they have to treat others poorly, it shouldn't matter if your from NY, NJ or wherever! As long as you come in peace and come to live a normal life you deserve to be treated kindly.

The only thing I wonder about is the current & future job market in Lancaster County? Many told me you have to travel outside the county as far as Philly to find a decent amount of jobs. I have looked over the Lancaster want ads and only noticed very few help wanted.

Bad areas I didn't notice, I guess the city can be bad at night, but again that's like any other city.

Correct me if I was wrong.

I've met some cold people in Lancaster County and Pa, primarily amish/ mennonites. That's just how they are. But go to New York, New Jersey( Atlantic City), Philly, the near suburbs and they get mean, rude AND unfriendly. There is no doubt that much of the resentment people from these areas get from locals is deserved. I don't even like making it sound like everybody is this way, people just tend to remember the one nasty person they meet and forget the 40 or 50 nice people that encounter.
The Amish don't drive like maniacs and flip you the bird. Where I work we get alot of traffic for music events and they stop by on their way back east. You can tell who's a local and who's an out of towner by their level of rudeness.
As for locals not liking outsiders, that's a universal everywhere you go. And unemployment for Lancaster County is about 3.5 to 4 %. If you want a job, you can get one but like anything you face competition and need skills for the better paying ones.

People should be judged by who they are, not from where they come from. When I lived in Philly I never committed violent acts so why should I be treated like a criminal here? I came here to get away from all of that, not to bring it with me. Trust me, if you pass me on the street you couldn't tell where I came from. My problem is that I have the "Philly accent" so as soon as I speak the locals can pick up where I'm from so immediately I'm considered a hostile nutcase that isn't worth their time! I just had that happen Monday at an auto repair shop in Lancaster. Three sentences out of my mouth and I got the "look" and the "where you from?" question. As soon as I said Philly up came the paper from his lap and the once-friendly conversation came to a screeching halt!! Oh, and by the way, not all the locals are as friendly as you think. Hand gestures is just one way of displaying rudeness; ignoring people who say hello and acting like you don't see a neighbor can be just as mean and hurtful.

As I stated before, check the crime reports in the Lancaster papers. You'll see most of the crimes are committed by young people, between the ages of 16 and 25, who were probably born and raised in the county. The locals should be more concerned about how their neighbor is bringing up their children then the new people from out of town who just moved in down the street.

Hi,
I live in Marietta. It is a quiet little river town, crime rate is very low. It is very peaceful here.It is right off of Rt. 441 and close to Rt. 30, and about 20 minutes from Harrisburg.
