I too would look at Annville. It has a cute main street and it is a college town. My daughter went to college there (Lebanon Valley) There are tons of cultural events that the townspeople can attend (concerts, art exhibits, lectures) that you might enjoy. It is a GREAT music college. Annville schools are really pretty good, according to my daughter. She student taught in music at one of the schools and said kids were all well behaved and eager to learn. (Where else can you find that????!! )
Apartments....I would try Harrisburg. Every thing in the Gap area is student...I don't think you want that!
Good luck! It's a great area for history too....

Fort Indiantown Gap is a great area! It is the PA National Guard Headquarters. It is not an active duty base, it is state owned. Only active duty unit is the EOD unit. There are a few other active duty positions, but not units. Those positions are usually to assist the National Guard. It's an open base, no gates. There are a few Checkpoints to restricted areas. I actually grew up on post, my father worked for the state. My wife is in the active duty army, and we recently received orders for Fort Indiantown Gap as well. Obviously, we are very excited to be returning home. I'm from Jonestown, and my wife is from South Lebanon. If you want the cute main street, stay in the Annville area...very nice.
If you want the city life, go for the Harrisburg area. I'm not familiar with the Harrisburg schools. I graduated from Nothern Lebanon and I actually still work for them. I'm the High School Marching Band show designer. Annville-Cleona is also a great school. The have a new building that I believe is set to open for the beginning of the next school year. Northern Lebanon has the High School and the Middle School in the same building, just different wings. They recently built and addition the the school so the middle school would have their own gym and caf, along with new classrooms. Elememtary is K-6, Junior High is 7-8, and High School is 9-12. I'm not sure, but I think Annville-Cleona School district is set up the same way.
We plan on living in the Jonestown area. We like it, and it's a 15-20 min drive to Lebanon or a 20-25 min drive the the harrisburg shopping area. Jonestown has a small food market, and a great pizza joint called Pizza Town.
Again, if you prefer the city, go the the Colonial Park area of Harrisburg. Everything you could possibily want would be in the immediate area!

hey, just saw that you were asking for information on the Gap. I don't know if you are here yet or not, but my husband is stationed at the Gap. Just to let you know, there is no housing available at the Gap, if you choose to live in military housing you can either ask for the DDC susquehanna which is in New Cumberland the housing is small there is a shoppette, golf course, community center and mostly military buildings. There are only about 100 families living in the DDC if that, the houses are like townhouses, about 6 houses per building. If you have a large family there are 4 or 5 bedroom townhouses that are only 2 attached houses, plus they are a lot bigger than the rest of the houses. They do also have single houses, but they are hard to get. If your husband is going to work in the Gap, it's about a 30 to 45 minute drive depending on traffic. You can also live at Carlisle Barracks which has a lot more to do and more like a Post. The commissary and the PX are there, and most people from the DDC go there for shopping. It's about 20 minutes from the DDC. Either way, if you choose military housing, it will be quite a drive for your husband, mine complains about it all the time, most of everybody that lives close to the Gap is because they have bought a house there. But you might try Jonestown or Lebanon for renting. Although it might be an apartment or townhouse that you will find. I hope this info helped.

I moved to the Lebanon County area September 2000. In the early days it seemed alien to me. But as I became involved through employment and church activities I am more comfortable here than I was. Northern Lebanon School District is an excellent school district. Annville-Cleona has the highest marks but Northern Lebanon is excellent also.
You can e-mail when you get into the area and I would be willing to assist you in getting used to the area. If you have already moved here and still feel lost I would count it a priviledge to show you around the Lebanon-Harrisburg-Lancaster-Reading area.

We have never been this far north and would like some insite on what to do and what not to do. What towns are close enough to post? What are the elementary schools like in the area? Do they have homes for rent there? Can't seem to find much online. What the weather is like? When does summer start and how hot does it actually get there? How much snow on an average does it get? Is it true that it is really lame there, but really nice if u like outdoorsy stuff, which I do? Thanks for any information that you can offer me.......

I've been to "The Gap" for weekend warrior training 25+ years ago. At that time we still had the WWII barracks. Haven't been there since.
Everything adamsouthfl said to absolutely correct. Welcome to PA and The Gap.
THANK YOU for serving and a big THANK YOU to the wives and families that "serve" too.
Welcome home, thanks for the great job you've done and will continue to do. God Bless you all!

On my way to the Gap!
Well hello everyone, well I have been reading all the responses to info on the Gap and I must say I am kind of nervous. I am a female active duty soldier that received orders to report there in early June. My husband is also currently active duty but will be retiring and following me to this assignment in July. My worries begin because I am currently pregnant with my first child and I will be expecting my child after I arrive to the Gap and in October. My question is what choices for medical care are available and in close proximity, military or civilian, etc. I love the midwife I have assigned to me now but I am worried how things will work out when I get there. I am also wondering about if there is an extremely good daycare in the area, hopefully I won't have utilize one if my mom comes with us but I should be prepared anyway. Also with my husband going to be newly retired with 24yrs of active service what type of employment can he find in the area? he was kind of looking for something along the lines of becoming a contractor and his MOS is 92A (logistician). I am a city girl and I get bored very easily so what is the best area that is city-like with shopping and all the major conveniences close by, your best suggestions? Also we plan on renting a house 3 or 4 bedroom that's very spacious and in a good friendly neighborghood. Lastly I was wondering if anyone would be able to tell me whether I am going to be deploying anytime soon if I am going to be assigned to the stryker bde. I hope not since my husband and I just got back from 15 and 18 month deployments in Jan 08. Well I am looking forward to any response. Thanks in advance
