Yes, it is true. I have been to Centralia and seen the smoke. There was an article about the town in a national magazine recently (I'm thinking "People", but maybe not.) There is also an area of Boulder County, Colorado called Marshall Mesa that has coal burning underground. My daughter's 3rd grade class went there when studying Colorado history!

Drive along route 61 through Shamokin and you'll see a literal mountain of coal slag and shale just north of town. How this stays in place I'll never know but it looked recently to have slid a little or maybe they were removing some of the slope. I believe this is the largest shale pile in the world or maybe the coal mine was the deepest, I 'll have to research.
Centralia and Mount Carmel was the site of a pretty bad commercial plane crash back in the late 1940s and one crash victim was buried at the Centralia cemetary.

Gettysburg, York County is the worst- backwards people, old decrepit places, failing job industry and nothing interesting to go to. The rock band Live came out of York County, that's why they left and never came back.

Gettysburg isn't the WORST-backwards people. Around gettysburg it's mostly well educated area due to higher new home prices (generally 250+) and Maryland commuters, although as you move north and west you start getting into the Pennsyltucky.

Gettysburg has improved a significant number of it's historic buildings and on the whole is a lot nicer than many other places in the US i've seen. The job industry is relatively stagnant mostly because it's a tourist town and the only job growth really is in those fields with a few exceptions.

York is bad, but western half and gettysburg are improving.

Not really. I won't disagree on some of the people there being backwards, but the area is seeing a lot of migration and the job market is pretty good.

Shamokin has the world's largest man made mountain, a culm pile from the Glen Burn mine.
