Yes, i'minformed, that is true. I have visited this town once, and taken digital pictures, which mysteriously erased from my camera. I am planning a trip back there soon. Although the state built a bypass around the town, the road that was engulfed is still there- with a high clearance four wheel drive vehicle, you can still drive down the road, although there are signs about the ground suddenly collapsing, so I don't recommend it. There are a few residents left, but they are not particularly friendly, and do not wish to discuss the fire with tourists passing through, as I have found. It is truly an eerie place- driveways lead to nothing, streams in the area are bright orange, the local graveyard has smoke coming from the graves. If it wasn't so dangerous and have an almost unbearable acrid odor, it would be the spookiest place to go during Halloween.

I grew up in North east pennsylvania and then went to school in Pittsburgh. NE PA is beautiful - lots of trees and mountains... but the others are right, the winters are pretty harsh.
Pittsburgh has better winters in the southwest, but it is more of a college city than anything being that there are so many schools all nearby. Suburbs outside of pgh are quite nice.

If you have kids, for their sake, don't locate in gettysburg. I grew up there and there is very little to do. Local past times are hanging out in the hanover mall 30 minutes away which is losing shops, or sign stealing. There are no places to shop, and traffic during the summer is horrendous. You have to watch out for people going around the circle the wrong way, and have to deal with going no where because of the tripling of the population during the re-enactments.

How is Mountain Top PA? I recently visited there to look at some beautiful new constructions in a development called The Ice Lakes. While I was impressed with the homes, I dont know much about the area and am wary. My husband and I live in NY state just north of nyc and the property taxes are driving us out.We want to find a nice place to raise our two small children. The job market is not important as I will be commuting to Newark Airport once a week to work my trip as a flt attendant(I just want to keep my commute under 2 hours). My husband is a retired NYPD. We love the outdoors and rural areas but at the same time dont want to drive an hour to the nearest supermarket.Any info would be appreciated.

We are also interested in moving to PA. My wife and I have family in the Bergen county, NJ area and would like to stay relatively near. Within a realistic 2 hours, I don't mean going 85 mph at 3 in the morning. To me this means likely somewhere near the NJ NY border on I-84, I-78 or I-80. Job market also does not really matter much as I work from home. What we are looking for is a place that is SAFE... good schools? (no kids yet). A place with a little downtown area would be nice. We like shop at Whole Foods (I do realize there is not one of these anywhere in NE PA), love to hike and bike... environmentally conscious. It is a bit hard to describe what we are looking for and even harder to find it. Basically a nice clean place to live for a young couple. Like robrose also don't want to drive an hour (or even half an hour) to the nearest grocery store. We pay too much to rent, and I know we could be owning a house for the same amount each month. Thank you for your recommendations!

Hi joe moving, We are so disgusted with the cost of living in ny and also want our dollars to go farther to improve our quality of life. Consider it a blessing that you rent and dont own right now. My husband and I are up to 9000 in taxes in Rockland County ny and just sick of it. Our house is nice but its a basic middle class house. Our dream is to own a brand new home in PA and hopefully cut our mortgage and taxes in half. We went to Mtn Top pa and saw a new development called the ice Lakes...really nice.Just dont know what kind of people are moving into this new dev so we are a little wary...the unknown is intimidating. We have two small kids heard the schools are good in this area. I have been advised to check out Bear creek and Drums, both right off I 80 and plan to take a ride soon. Its worth it to go a little farther into the state away from the nj border if you want less crowds . Best of luck and let me know if you find something worth checking out. We love the outdoors too and are looking for a scenic place.

Anyone have any thoughts of the NE mining valleys?
Good Day... newbie here.. but not to the net....
Anyone have any thoughts on the mining valleys of NE PA? Many are sleepy towns.. small populations... Im particularly thinking about the Lehigh Valley.. Jim Thorpe to Tamaqua.
as a second question, - Whats up with the casinos in the Poconos.. IS it going to happen?
