I relocated to Lancaster from Las Vegas 7 years ago and don't regret it for a second! I thought I was a "big city" girl, but realized you don't have to live in the big city to get the advantages. Yes, the people in Lancaster will still be very friendly after you are no longer a tourist. Also, the housing is still holding values, and we have fewer foreclosures than many other parts of the country. Yes, there are higher paying jobs in Lancaster county. I used to be in real estate, so I'll give my speech about what I learned. Lancaster county is more resiliant and more stable than other areas due to our diversity in the job sectors, and proximity to major cities, ie, Philly, Harrisburg, Baltimore. You can commute easily to any of those areas, and we have many residents who do. We have a very diversified work force. Manufacturing, professional, agriculture, you name it, we got it. Our school districts tend to have higher graduation percentages and higher college bound senior percentages. The people are friendly, cost of living isn't bad, and since we're in the southern part of PA, we tend to miss the real heavy Nor'easters in the way of snow. If you like culture, Baltimore, Phila, And DC are all within a 1.5 hr drive. You can get to NYC by train (catch it in downtown Lancaster), and I think arrive within 2 hrs. And traffic? Being from Las Vegas, I still say...what traffic? Although the locals do argue with me that point. I guess it's gotten worse for them over the years. And heaven help you if you're stuck on rte 30 with a major accident. May as well take a sandwich and coffee, cause you'll be there a while. Hope this info was helpful in your decision.

Thanks for the information. I'm really leaning towards making the move to this area. Was just there for a visit again on Thursday of last week (the day it poured out all day long!). Just need to find a job and a place to live. I'm hoping to be able to make my move around springtime, as I'd rather not move in the winter if I can help it.
Hey all:
Family looking to relocate to Lancaster from Clarks Summit PA (near Scranton). Hubby has pending offers from LGH and VA hosp in Coatesville plus interview at Hershey Med Center next week. (He's an Occupational Therapist.)
I'm interested, lititzman, to hear your opinion of Lititz people since I missed your views. We have friends who live there. We've been told that it might be where we belong.
We've trawled Manheim, Ephrata, New Holland, Strasburg, East Petersburg for possible home spots.
We have four school-aged children and hope to locate in a rural area just outside of a small town with a great downtown not far from a larger commercial shopping area. We try to live on one income with my part-time income for school tuition and emergencies. Our youngest daughter has a chromosomal disorder so we need to stay within hours of Children's Hosp of Phila for regular visits.
We've visited several churches and have met some great people.
Any comments or suggestions are very welcome.
I'd also like inside info on great places to eat and visit when we make our next trip (next month).
If the jobs and other details work out, we hope to relocate in June.

Travel-wise Lititz is good for your family. It's close to the PA Turnpike so your husband can take it East to the Downingtown/Coatsville exit, plus he has the Route 30 Bypass as an alternate, or West to Hershey, or he can take Route 322 West into Hershey.
I've met several people from Manheim and East Pete and they are very nice and down-to-earth. Downtown Manheim is tight and Route 72 seems to be always congested. Ephrata has some drug issues in certain areas but they have a revived shopping district. I don't know alot about New Holland so I can't give you an honest evaluation of the town. I"ve been through it and it appears to be a decent place.
My opinion of Lititz:
Downtown shopping district: one of the best in the county. A variety of stores and eateries. They have Second Friday events that involve different exhibits and the stores stay open late. Plenty of free parking. Wilbur's Chocolates is nearby and Greicco's has the best ice cream and water ice around. Park City, which is a huge shopping mall, is about 15 minutes away and the outlet stores are 30 minutes away. Travel to both is usually a breeze.
Children friendly: Lititz Springs Park is a terrific place for kids. There's a rec area and a stream where you can feed the ducks. Warwick School District is considered to be one of the better districts in the county.
Crime: Usually minor things like DUI'S and larcenies. Like most towns there's the occasional domestic situations and burglaries but nothing too severe.
Okay, now the people: I have found them, in general, to be cold and self-centered. Some ignore you completely and some say hello when they feel like it. Bear in mind this could be my own issue. I'm old school and friendly and can't understand why people who have seen you before and live in your development can't say hi as you walk past them. Our church has the same attitude. There is a general fear that those who moved here from other locations, especially Philly and NJ, will try to change the way of life here and bring crime and low morals into the community. I've been here 5 1/2 years and I've gotten jaded with the nonsense. However, my wife has had enough and wants to move.
SOOO, if you can overlook the people issue this is the ideal place to raise a family. Just don't let it bother you when your neighbor has a Tastefully Yours party and doesn't invite you or the neighors stop speaking when you walk past. Best of luck with your move.
Oh, shoot, about the cold Lititz people. The Lackawanna-Luzerne valley region up here tends to have some of the same mentality, except it's more of a nationality thing: the Irish, the Italian, the Slovaks, and now the Mexicans. All of the different nationalities make it an interesting place to dine; but until you insinuate yourself into the group, you're definitely out. There's also a sort of negative, doomed vibe going on here.
Like anywhere, though, you can find good-hearted people who eventually become like family.
We're looking for a place where our family will be embraced. I don't think I could overlook the people issue in Lititz; I'm all about community. Maybe we could live close by you and your wife and wage an assault on snobbery.
Well, if you end up moving, maybe you could sell us your house! (though we're not really development people)
One last question, and I know it will sound sort of low-class: Are there any McDonalds or Pizza Huts or Dunkin Donuts in or around Lititz (besides at Park City; I also know there's one in Manheim)? How about a major grocery store, like Weis?

Thanks for the info.
I don't think your question is low-class. There is a McDonald's at the Shoppes at Kissel Hill, which is located on the southern end of Lititz, on Route 501, bordering Manheim Township near the Lancaster County Airport. There's also a Giant Food store and several other shops in the same complex. I THINK they're going to build a Target sometime although I haven't heard of when the ground-breaking ceremony will happen. Weis is also on 501 across the street from Burger King. Pizza Hut is near the Weis next to Issac's. There's also a grocery store called Weisser's, similar to Weis, further north on 501. Stauffer's Food store is next to Giant. They're a great community-type store but can't compete with Giant's prices due to their size. I can't think of where a Dunkin Donuts is offhand but there are bakeries in town. I feel the best place to eat any meal is the Lititz Family Cupboard, which is located behind Weisser's at 501 & Newport Road. They have a breakfast and dinner buffet that are a dieter's nightmare! If you have anymore questions feel free to PM me.

Trust me, if you ever see me, you'd think that I've eaten EVERYWHERE in this county Seriously, I did eat dinner there and it was great. Be prepared to wait for a table but it's worth it. Enjoy your visit
