I was afraid to post what seems a silly question, but I really do appreciate all the suggestions! I used to take 12-14 hour road trips by myself all the time when I was younger, but last thanksgiving I had a sudden panic attack while going through the Tennessee mountains. My nerves were so bad after that I couldn't get back on highways for months after that. Now I take prescription medication for my nerves before I get on the road. I thought I had gotten over it until I drove thru PA this past weekend.

Since I posted my question, I'm happy to say that I made it back to VA. I ended up taking I-80 East all the way - no major mountainous curves, just minor inclines and declines. It added 2 hours to my drive, but I made it safely.

Thanks again!

Ironically the turnpike road itself is probably the flattest straightest road in PA and probably the nation going through terrain like that. When they built that road they made it as straight as they could hence the reason you may have very high bridges and very steep embankments on the side. They don't build them like that anymore for a variety of reasons including safety because many people would get fatigued because of the manatony. Instead they try and contour the road to the terrain.

Interstate 80 is much more windy and hilly than the turnpike. I feel like I'm screwing myself into the ground sometimes.

The turnpike is your best bet. It's narrow and expensive, but not nearly as annoying.

I couldn't imagine not liking a drive through the mountains. I'm the opposite....flat terrain drives me nuts....the drive through Ohio and Indiana is as painfully boring as anywhere.

I think the only part of PA that isn't mountainous is the Philadelphia area.
