Chambersburg/Greencastle restaurants
We are moving from Savannah GA to Chambersburg. One of the things we love about Savannah is the abundance of restaurants. The selection is large and diverse. The seafood is great of course and downtown there is a wide variety of regional, theme and ethnic foods.
During our house hunting trip in October we tried and enjoyed Orchards in Chambersburg. It was a nice place to eat and had some great food. What are some other place in the area for great food? Will we have to hit Hagarstown MD for a better selection. When I say great restaurants, I don't mean the franchised eateries.
Thanks,
Vincent

Hi! I moved to Chambersburg in March and hate to admit I haven't been to many of the local restaurants yet, but I have heard some good things about some. Wish I could give you some better details, but here are ones I've heard good things about:
Montezuma Mexican, Dodie's, Schoenberger's, The Cottage Restaurant, Mario's Italian Cafe, Green Village Drive In.
There are a few of the usual Chinese--one big buffet on Rt 30, Jade Garden maybe? There are a lot of small pizza places too...I love Little Vince's on Scotland Main St. They have a nice casual sit down restaurant too. Another Chinese buffet right next door.
Sorry, can't think of any seafood places or anything else. I came from the Metro DC area and was used to a little of everything. Chbg sure doesn't match up to it but that's okay with me! Also, Hagerstown is really only 20 minutes down 81, so it's not too bad. It used to take me that long or longer to get to some of my fave restaurants in DC!
Welcome and good luck with the move!

Chambersburg is a very nice little city. I was impressed with the downtown area. There are definately many places to eat there.

Interesting thread. I actually have a place over in Fulton County, Needmore to be exact. I've been living part time there for about twenty years. Unfortunately, I've not been able to get into Chambersburg recently.
In Chambersburg
The Cottage
Dodie's
As was mentioned, you may also want to take a short drive down I-81 into Hagerstown. Some of the places I've heard of are
LJ's and the Kat Lounge
Schmankerl Stube
The House of Kobe
A word of caution about me, though. I was born and raised in New Jersey and my experience is NYC restaurants so I'm just a bit picky.
I'd love to hear whatever people who live in the area ful time about these places I've listed.

Thanks, that was exactly what we were looking for. Dining varies from place to place, and we enjoy trying new places. It can be frustrating when you ask for recommendations for a good local restaurant and people direct you to Applebees or another franchised eatery.
I am REALLY going to miss the local BBQ places we have as well.
Thanks again and keep 'em coming.

You're welcome.
I know what you mean about being directed to an Applebee's for "good food." Like I said, I'm used to places like Keen's Chop House in NYC for a good steak. When I first came out here, I asked for a good steakhouse and was directed to Longhorn's.
FWIW, if you would like to make a day of it, Baltimore has one BBQ that I'm aware of: Big Bad Wolf BBQ
If you'd like to take in an Orioles game (the New York Yankees second home ), there is a BBQ stand outside the stadium just behind right field that had good, albeit pricey, pulled pork.

We moved here from California San Francisco bay area Aug 2008. When it comes to restaurants be prepared for a major life change. You have very limited selections even within 10-15miles. Plenty of Italian Pizza places, Buffets and some Chinese but nowhere near the amounts accustomed to when living in a metropolitan area. Found a couple of nice places we will return to however the journey is ongoing and we will have a lot of time to search the areas for dining. Wonderful place to be here, relaxed, unrushed, cost of living sooooo much better than Bay Area, Friendly people. No one is pushing and shoving walking or driving. Enjoy!

I enjoyed the Dobbin House. It's been years since I was there. The history behind the house is quite interesting, as well.

Depending on where you come from, Chambersburg is really a small town surrounded by rural area. Most of PA is like this actually...the closest big towns will be Harrisburg to the north and Hagerstown MD to the south.
Given that, there are a lot of chain restaurants here...the typical fast food and Friday's type places. Then there are the typical pizza and chinese joints...there are quite a few of each. There are also some good family owned restaurants. The Orchards is a very nice more formal place. Montezuma is good for mexican. A brand new Japanese steakhouse/sushi bar just opened. I came from the Metro DC area, so I find the selection lacking, especially regarding ethnic foods, but I'm dealing with it!
Things here run at a slower pace...but there are things to do. Lots of history type stuff, and Gettysburg is only 15 minutes or so away. There's a big state park nearby with swimming, etc. Ski Liberty isn't too far away. Ice Fest is this weekend... IceFest PA - the region's largest winter ice festival. Lots of bingo goes on around here too!
Check out the local paper for an idea of things... Home - Chambersburg Public Opinion.
