Wink silly ? re: deer/bear crossing signs

Had a friend once who asked me while we were driving thru the countyside, "How do they get the deer to cross the road at the signs?"...
But anyway, that got me to thinking, and I wondered how many times an incident would have to happen with a deer or bear for that matter to warrant placing a sign on a road?
I can imagine the deer are pretty plentiful and it's well known that there are many accidents with deer. But when I saw the bear crossing sign on route 309, just north of route 100, I couldn't help but wonder just how plentiful they are around here.

Lots of bears along rt. 309, but its all relative. 'Still a rare event to see a bear so those signs are probably more for attracting tourists than for avoiding car accidents! Now deer are another matter. They have pretty predictable routes of travel having to do with food sources and bedding areas , so those signs really do mean something.

Reminds me of a family car trip years ago when my younger brother asked my parents "Can deer read?" after they replied "No honey they can't, why?"
and he said "How do they know where to cross?". True story, he did!

Way cool, I had heard that they had Gator crossing signs...but panther is new to me.

As to the bear crossing signs I think if I saw one crossing that highway, I'd literally flip my lid. PLUS that's one thing I definately wouldn't want to hit with my car.

Thanks for the responses.

My SIL hit a bear on the way from Lock Haven to Renovo one time. Fortunately she also hit her brakes so she only bumped it. It rolled over, got up, looked at her and walked on into the woods!

Another time someone was killed in an accident on I-180 just southeast of Muncy when they hit a bear that had wandered onto the road.

I've seen the Panther Crossing signs along Alligator Alley in Florida. I didn't see any actual panthers, though. I did see a dead alligator on the berm, though.

What freaks me out is falling rock signs. What's the point? I'm trying to watch the road, I can't be looking up to see if any rocks are about to fall on me.

Falling Rock? You mean they haven't found that Indian yet?
Left over story my Grandpa used to tell.

LOL! My husband says Falling Rock (the Indian) worked out some deal that wherever he carved his name in a tree, when the tree was cut down to build a road, the road builder had to replace the tree with a sign.
