Default York Apartment

Hi I just got a job in the west york area that I am scheduled to start near the end of June and I am trying to find my first apartment. What parts of town should I be staying away from and where should I be looking? Are there good apartments that people recommend? I don't mind commuting a little ways to work but I'd like to keep the commute less than 20 minutes. I am looking for a single bedroom apartment and don't want to be spending much more than $800/month. When should I start looking for apartments and when should I be signing the lease?
