More Pittsburgh Driving Tips
- You can't get there from here
- Many Pittsburgh entrance and exit ramps have stop signs instead of yield signs. Pittsburgher's will often come to a full stop prior to slowly merging, even on ramps that do have yield signs.
- Everyday is "Sunday" here, so watch out for slowpokes!
- Pittsburgh drivers are more polite than most so watch out for people in front of you who may be stopped in the roadway to allow someone to turn left in front of them or enter from a side road.
- Most roads in Pittsburgh are two lanes with narrow to non-existent shoulders and lots of twists and turns. Watch out for joggers, bikers and pedestrians!

Hey Pennsylvanians. Can anyone give me feed back as to the lifestyle of life in Pa for baby boomers just coming into the social security age? My husband and I have been in Iowa our entire lives, love the state, having a hard time facing a move to Pa, but our daughter and son in law are wanting us to move there for our senior years and to watch our new grandchild. They are purchasing a house in their neighborhood where we will live rent free, I loved the area they live in when I visited, but am concerned how Pa compares to taking care of their low income senior citizens as compared to Iowa which is high on the AARP list.

So that's why the fool from Cleveland rear-ended my Mercury at nearly 50mph at an on ramp back in '91....the ramp which had a clearly marked STOP sign. That's ok, it cost me the Merc but cost him his brand new Honda (his wife's car), two broken wrists and a few other internal injuries. Failure to adapt to different surroundings, or the "we do it right, why do you do it wrong? attitude.

The stop sign might have taken him by surprise, but believe me, Ohioans DO know what a stop sign is...hopefully you weren't really as happy about his injuries as it seems. I bet the accident had nothing to do with attitude, just a stupid mistake on his part. Glad you were ok, though!

I find that when I return to WPA that I drive like I'm still on RTE 4 in SoMD. Wife points it out all the time.

Check your AARP list. A lot will depend on where you're going to live. Large areas of PA are isolated, especially in the northern tier above I-80. Hospitals are generally good and the staffs are smart enough to know when to send somebody to Pittsburgh or elsewhere.

Drivers and us "old folks"
I moved here about 18 months ago from SoCal, the drivers are a little hard to get used to, but are much more courteous than SoCal. As far as senior citizens, I moved here and had seen the best doctors in OC to find out what exactly was wrong with me for two years, I was here less than six months and got a diagnosis, sure the docs here in Altoona sent me to Pittsburgh, but they knew enough to do it. There are lots of retirement communities, cost of living is much less, except for heat and most utilities are included in those communities. For me, my son, DIL and I purchased a large home with some acreage in a small town and live together with the grandkids (2), the dogs (mine), the cat (theirs), the rabbits (the kids) and we all get along just fine. I am going to CA the end of the month to visit my other 7 grandkids and my 3 daughters and while looking forward to it, I am not looking forward to the traffic and insane folks.
