Don't shoot the messenger, but I have had the opportunity to meet, and eventually befriend, 3 people born and raised in Erie, who all have moved to Pittsburgh. When speaking of Erie, EACH and every one of them have called it "DREARY ERIE", on separate occasions. I'm sure they're not pulling that nick-name out of their behinds for nothing. And, their main gripe wasn't the weather. It was the lack of things to do up there. Again, don't shoot the messenger.

It's hard to understand or respect how much there is to do where you grew up sometimes. Erie has a huge mall (if you're into that kind of thing) and ENDLESS opportunities to explore and enjoy Lake Erie. If you want flashy bling bling and a keeping up with the jones's atmosphere, no it's not for you. But there is plenty to do. I just don't buy that argument about Erie.

Everyone calls Erie "Dreary Erie." It's really not much of an insult.
As for there being nothing to do, those three people must not have much of an imagination. For its size, Erie has quite a wealth of "things to do," starting with that big ol' body of water there.

Well, then there you go. Because the 3 people, I've befriended from up there, LOVE that atmosphere you just described.

There is plenty to do in Erie, I lived most of my 38 years of my life there, you simply have to have a zest for life and more interests then staggering your arse down to the corner bar every night.

I was looking at houses for rent in the Erie Pa area and saw one. The house stands on a corner lot at the intersection of Parade and 35th Street. Anybody know that area? Is it a quiet or safe neighborhood? I know some people posted here to stay away from certain streets and areas of Erie. I was just wondering if this is one of them. Any info will be greatly appreciated.

How old are your friends from Erie? From what i've been gathering is that majority of the people that actually hate Erie are the people that are in there 20's and early 30's and single. I guess there's not a lot to do for a single person there but for a person that has a family, there are a bunch of simple enjoyable things to do there. I am still debating on moving there from the west coast.

That area of Parade is very nice. Generally the rule is above 32nd Street is very nice. I used to bike in the neighborhood. It offers a very beautiful peak of the waterfront if you walk down to the street side and look north. Just stay away from Parade from 29th Street and down.

I moved away when I was 18 to go to college, and didn't come back. When I'd return for visits, I was always amazed at how my single friends had found their niches in Erie, and not simply by continuing friendships with people from high school. That opened my eyes to what a not-so-bad-after-all place Erie was, and the breadth of "things to do" besides lie on the beach all summer.
I'm sure I would have done the same if I'd stayed, but was too impatient and too hell-bent on being independent.
