Default Driving the Pennsylvania Turnpike

Hi there!

I'm driving from Ohio to Maryland to see a friend, and there are two ways I can get there. One is to take I-70 into Pennsylvania, then take I-79 to I-68 and take I-68 on through.

The other is to stay on I-70 the entire way, which is a toll road. How much would it cost me to take I-70 the entire way through Pennsylvania? And would it save me time over taking I-68 further south???

Thanks!

I don't know about the current toll rates, since they recently increased quite a bit, but I have made the drive both ways from MD to OH over the last 10 years or so.

If the weather is good, meaning no substantial snow expected, I would recommend 68. It's a much nicer drive--more scenic through the mountains--and no tolls. The turnpike always has construction, and this route usually has none or very little. I would make sure to take 470 around Wheeling, WV instead of taking 70 straight through.

Have a safe trip!

You would only be taking the turnpike for ~ 1.5 hours in PA from New Stanton to Breezewood - toll would be reasonable (under $5 most likely).

Not much construction on the turnpike in Feb, so that wouldn't be a big issue.

If there is the threat of snow, I'd definitely take the PA Turnpike (I-70/I-76). In other cases, I'd take I-68, which will be longer time-wise and distance-wise but is very, very scenic, particularly between Cumberland, MD and Hancock, MD (one of the more scenic drives, especially on an interstate, in the eastern U.S.).

The Pennsylvania Turnpike - Tolls

According to this Breezewood to New Stanton for a passenger car is $6.60.

Breezewood is a unique experience. Breezewood, Pennsylvania - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Yeah, something like that However, you have to be careful in Breezewood because the interchange from turnpike 70 to regular 70 can be confusing and does get people messed up. However, the town has lots of places to eat and stay as it's a popular stop on the pike.
