Default Curious about York, PA.

New to Pa! Can anyone let me know anything about York, PA? Is it a good place to raise a family or a bad place?

York is not a bad overall. Are there bad areas...yes, even within the suburbs there are places to be avoided.

However you compare the city to Baltimore or Harrisburg, its not bad at all. Majority of the shootings people hear about are the results of domestics, not the gangbangers and drug dealers having a turf war. The QRT doesn't get too many call-outs, nor does the Forensic Unit, and the Drug Task force does an excellent job.

It really depends where in York you are. All the PDs get DUI's, drugs, domestics, suicides, accidents, a body here and there. The number of calls for service can vary greatly just by location within a jurisdiction. Go down to the local PD and talk to some of the local LEOs to get a better idea about your location. Community policing is the "in" thing now so the brass is big on "building partnerships" with the community.

A fairly significant chunk of the city of York itself, especially the area just south of downtown, isn't very good. However, parts of the city and most of the surrounding area near the city is perfectly fine to raise a family, though much of the suburban area is very sprawling, post-1960 or 1970 development.
