PA gets a lot of flack about being a bad state to live in. Its simply not true. Every small city across America is struggling with high crime, high illegal immigration rates, drugs, gangs etc. PA is no different. I could name plenty of towns in NJ, SC, NC, MA any many others that are struggling with these same problems. Its a widespread problem that we have to address as a nation.

PA is a great state. I lived for years in Bucks County and absolutely loved it. The shore, the mountains, NYC, Philly, quaint towns, farms, lakes, etc. all within a 2 hour drive. I'd be back there if I could afford a house.

Default Pa. native

I was born & raised in Huntington County. Pa. is a great state as well as the people. I love Pa.

People there are honest hardworking people. I must say unless you are planning to retire there, there's not much to do. I'm currently living in Va. Beach Va. I love it here as well & the drive isnt that bad. I'm 39 yrs. of age. I love the life here at the beach while I'm still young. I would definitly consider retiring there in 25 years give or take a few years.

Very well said! Personally, I see nothing but good things for the future of Northeastern Pennsylvania. Is the economy here sluggish? Of course. However, if you're willing to drive or take upcoming mass transit options into NJ/NY/Lehigh Valley (as I am), then your abysmal salary woes will be more than compensated for. For such an "economically depressed area" as most on here consider Northeastern Pennsylvania to be, there certainly is a proliferation of Lexuses, BMWs, Audis, Infinitis, Mercedes-Benzes, Volvos, Navigators, Suburbans, Escaldes, Land Rovers, Hummers, and other $35,000+ luxury vehicles lining the roadways near my home, aren't there? If the economic turmoils here are anywhere nearly as bad as everyone would make them out to seem, then most local people would have to decide between bread and milk, NOT between which German automaker offers superior interior leather and navigation systems! I even saw a BENTLEY last night while at the Barnes & Noble in Wilkes-Barre (with PA plates may I add!)

Personally, it seems as if those whining about the "economic depression" around here are those who never had the ambition to further their educations and broaden their marketable skills to employers. Now, instead of earning $60,000+ salaries with Master's Degrees, as people in the more "affluent" areas in NJ/NY/Philly/Lehigh Valley are, they're working at Denny's, Wal-Mart, and McDonald's with less than a diploma and expecting people to feel sorry for them. Why have any sympathy for their own lack of ambition? My parents aren't "well-off" by any means, but I'm working nearly full-time while carrying six college courses per semester because I know my stress and suffering now will pay off in not having to have a career where I'll peak at $8/hr! If you didn't care to do the same as a teenager and are now stuck in a dead-end job, then you have only yourselves to blame! I'm just tiring of the people who will bash Scranton for "not having good jobs", and then when you inquire about their education and skill levels, they get defensive and switch subjects.

I know of many people who are planning to live the "good life" here in Scranton; living in our safe, affordable, friendly neighborhoods while earning respectable salaries so that we won't join the ranks of the "woe is me; life sucks!" PA bashers. You can be successful even in places such as MS or AL if you apply yourselves!

Default My Nick Says It All

My nick says it all -- I'm coming home! I have lived in Southern California since I got out of grad school in '69, and it's time to come home to PA!

LA: 8-3/4% sales tax
LA: one-hour freeway commutes considered normal
LA: two hours to find a farm
LA: 45 minutes to a mountain hike, but you could lose your life it is so steep
LA: Salvadorean gangs
LA: Mexican gangs
LA: 17 other kinds of gangs, street people, and their drugs
LA: SMOG (the equivalent of a pack-a-day habit for every man, woman, and child)
LA: overpriced everything
LA: 675,000 kids in a school system that does not educate
LA: movie star "governator"
LA: I paid $2.779 for a gallon of regular unleaded this morning

oh yeah, the beach, well that is cool, but if you don't need to surf, there are fabulous lakes for swimming and boating in PA...
and yes, oranges in your backyard are pretty cool, too, but PA has beautiful forsythia in the spring...

See you in PA!

I will only live in PA if there is no other piece of land on earth. here is why:

the roads are too narrow and crooked.

big snow storms and schools close too many times per year.

Air quality sucks.

gang activities are same as that of LA and other big city for city like Lancaster, york, and reading.

the economy is nasty. imagine your making 8.50/hr on east coast cost of living.

people are rude with the exception of those in the western part of the state.

it's too crowded, even traffics for small towns are horrible.

it stincks, especially in lancaster county, due to overcrowded farmlands. some farmers simply toss their dead animals to their backyard, especially the Amish people. sometimes your craving for nice fresh air, especially in the summer.

the idea of cheating the customers runs across from small business owner to large coperation such as bank.

one of the most racial discrimination places in the US.

too mountainous and hilly. a nice big park is a dream here.

wheather is nasty. 40 degrees one day and 80 the next day.

can't wait to leave.

Agreed.

I made a huge mistake in 2000 when I moved myself and my fiance from New York City to Montgomery county.

- The people are nasty and antisocial
- The food is the worst I have ever had, you can't even buy decent stuff to cook yourself!
- The housing has gone up so much, we're starting to talk Long Island, where I'm originally from.
- The drivers. Pennsylvania has the worst drivers out of any state on the east coast. The only drivers I found to be almost as bad were in Michigan.
- The seniors, and senior social programs. There are WAY TOO MANY advantages to being a senior citizen in this state. Even the lottery goes to pay for people who should have been saving for retirement, rather than education like it does in most states.
- The education. Worst public schools I have ever seen. I got into a conversation with this girl in her early 20's about Katrina. I ended up saying something about Jesse Jackson. No lie, she asked "I forget, when was he president?"
- Oh yeah, did I mention the people were nasty inbred hillbillies for the most part? Well, not all of them. Just the ones I seem to encounter day in, day out, every lousy day that I have been here. I'm no longer surprised that the largest Klan rally in history was held in 1991 in the great state of PA. It makes sense now. Something else weird, no matter where I shop the cashiers never say "thank you" after I pay them for something. I guess thats a common courtesy us nasty New Yorkers are used to. The list goes on.

Thankfully, the housing market in LI is poised to head due south. We're waiting like vultures to spring on the first decent deal we can find.

All I can say is that some of you people certainly must live in different Pennsylvania than the one I live in.
