Just wondering why you want to move to Erie? I did the opposite, I moved from Erie to Pittsburgh. Probably one of the greatest things I've ever done in/for my life.

I'm not sure what your line of work is, but jobs are few and far between in Erie, unless you are in the service industry, health care, or are lucky enough to be employed by Erie Insurance. GE, the areas largest employer, just let 1500 people go.

If you want to live in the city, you will find deals upon deals on nice homes to both rent and buy. My recommendation for living within the city limits is the west side of the city, anywhere from 34th Street up. Nice beautiful homes in that area, a lot of the Erie Police officers and city officials live in that area. Most of the streets (except for 38th Street which is a main thoroughfare) are relatively quiet.

Do you want urban/suburban/rural living?

How much can you spend on rent/house?

I have the same question as Scott. I'm self-employed and I'd make lots more money in Pittsburgh then Erie for the same amount of work.

Look south of Erie. It's more rural and, personally, I'd prefer to raise my kids there than right in Erie. You can still commute to work in Erie. Just my two cents
