My husband worked for a municipal sanitation Dept on L.I. before we moved here, when we moved he became a truck driver, he is home every night and started with a 50% increase in his annual NY salary. That was a considerable increase for a major cut in our cost of living. It depends how hard you are willing to work and what profession you are in. I would never trade my lifestyle that I have here in Pa for L.I.

Please I live in pike county next to Milford to be exact!!! Dingmans Ferry to be even more exact. Very gorgeous, very affordable, very safe, EXCELLENT SCHOOLS, and only about an hour and 45 min. to ny city. I live here with my my hubby and four children. My hubby comutes to Englewood NJ everyday but woul live nowhere else but PA. As for the flooding , Well I grew up on the NY side of the Deleware and had no problems. Came over to PA, insidently because as I was growing up we all knew Deleware Valley schools were rated the best and had and have the best Acidemics going. My kids get all straight A"'s!I live in a community and I personally have no problem with flooding. Come on people if you live real close to any body of water you will have flooding occasionally. Just don't buy a house on the banks of the deleware. Real estate doesn't seem to be slowing down around here. People who live here are trying to buy more property around them just so we don't change our quaint town too much. We are as about as north as you can go in Pa so I do know1hour or more into Pa they have been having problems with some flooding. Sorry I just don't see any of those negative problems here in this part of PA, Been here 2 years and my whole family loves it. Any specific question feel free to ask. Good Luck.

Lets see where should I start? Drugs, Crime, overpriced housing, congested roadways, low wages with city prices, too many commuters working out of the area causing increases in taxes where their not warrented. Gangs in the schools, muggings at ATMs, drive by shootings, non-caring public officials, poor roads.. over development, pollution, need anymore? no this is not typical of any area, the Poconos were my home for 52 years and I watched this happen over the last 30 years, and its still going! its not just progress, its the biggest "money grab" by developers on the East Coast. If anyone was considering moving to the Poconos I'd consider NYC first because this is what the Poconos are trying so hard to emulate! vacation is a far cry from year-round my friend. do yourself a favor DON'T move there, there are a lot nicer places.

Now back to the Poconos. If you want to be closer to NYC and family as I do, check out Wayne County or Pike County but away from the Deleware River due to flooding. Wayne County and Pike County are safe, beautiful and peaceful. Country and rural! Stop giving the Pocono's a bad rap!
I agree with the good and bad areas assessment , but lets get real here ! The Delaware River valley has very few houses in it due to the Delaware River National Recreation Area that runs from Milford ( Pike County) to Delaware Water Gap in Monroe County. Wayne County is very nice but secluded and good for only the staunchest commuters who are willing to battle the poor road conditions in winter . Lets not forget that Pike County is the FASTEST GROWING county in PA with Monroe County comming in a close second . Its just a matter of time before Pike begins to feel the effects that Monroe now does .

We live in a small town called Shickshinny, it's a nice rural community. There's downtown, 2 red lights and then the country side that stretches 10-20 miles outside of down town. Its 10 mins to grocery store in town, 15 to the chain grocer in Nanticoke. Northwest Area is the school district, I've worked there in the past, lovely school. There are 3 grade school k-6 then a jr/sr high 7-12. We commute about 20-30 minutes to work in Wilkes-Barre, PA. There are industrial parks, businesses and 3 hospitals in the area north of Shickshinny. South is Berwick and Bloomsburg, employment available there also. WE are selling a home in the country in Shickshinny, 3 bed 2.5 bath. let me know if you want more information

The Poconos Are Overrated. If Anyone Moves Here And You Have Kids I Feel For Them. If You Move Here And You Have Kids You Are Being Selfish And Thinking Of Yourselves! Prices Have Gone Higher, There Is Nothing For Kids To Do But Watch T.v And Get Fatter. If You Really Want To Get Away From Taxes And All That, Move Down South. Other Than That You Might As Well Stay In Nyc Or Nj Because Taxes In Pa Are Going To Be 7% Real Soon, And I Love It Lol. I Love The Fact That Nyers Move Her And Think It Is Going To Be Peaches And Cream And Then Reality Hits. Hope You Have Money For A New Car Every Year Because Those Commutes Back And Forth Between Ny And Pa Are Not Cheap And It Is Wear And Tear On The Car. Good Luck With Your Move! Ohh By The Way Did I Mention That There Are No Jobs In Pa! And Just To Warn You The Housing Prices Have Sky Rocket In The Past Few Months, So While You Are Working At A Mini Store I Hope That Your $2500 Mortgage Doesn't Fall Behind, Then You Will Have To Move To My Area Of Easton. You Really Want To Live Cheap Go To Mississippi!

About the Poconos: I've been here for 4 years and I'm an unactive realtor (at the moment). I haven't seen any crime or the nightmares some people say about this area. I'm in E. Stroudsburg. True, Monroe is huge and I'm not familiar with every square foot of this place but in my profession I did travel somewhat. What we suspect (some realtors, neighbors, and I) from just discussions with locals and transplants, is simply that some people want you to move somewhere else! Locals want things to remain the same (mom & pops stores, unlimited choice parking, no talking or visible children, etc.), and transplants...Well, the longer they've been here, the more they want you to stay away. I have to admit, I'm torn as well. I want the progress (more retail stores for buying choices, restaurants, and ready access to all I want) we're seeing in this area, but I also want it to remain extra quite and almost empty as it was when I got here. -Just for me, everything, just for me- But how realistic is this? Picture this; Now when I go to the mall, I can't find a parking space right in front. I have to park 30 feet away from the door, what is this world coming to?! We want it all but don't want to pay the price. That's what is wrong with Poconos. If you ask a person who wants you to stay away, they'll tell you horror stories about the Poconos. Do what most people do, CONCIDER THE SOURCE of the information you get, then check for yourself. On the one hand I want you to move somewhere else so that I can get that parking space in front of the store, on the other hand I want you to move here because you bring progress...What can I say? I'm only human.

I don't know if this is common, but I recently applied for a job with a university in Scranton that was seeking someone with a Master's in Education, and several years experience advising/counseling students. Before the interview was scheduled, I was informed that the "hourly wage" was $11.87 an hour.

What the heck?

We are thinking of relocating from Cedar Park, Texas to Milford, PA. Do you think that Milford, PA to Mahwah, NJ if too far to commute? We love the Milford, PA area because I have family in the Scranton area, but my husband's office would be in Mahwah.. any comments? Thanks. VRM
