Default Is it as horrible as they say to live by a Quarry?

Hi Everyone,

I like posting here because everyone is nice and gives honest answers so can anyone tell me if it is truly horrible to live by an active quarry?

We moved into the New Hanover Township area last year, and although I thought I did lots of research I didn't find out until after (my luck) that we will be living very close to where they are waiting to put a brand new quarry.

We get lots of information about how it will be terrible, debris & dust, constant noise, structural damage to the house because of blasting, wells running dry...and I was curious if anyone can tell me their experiences?

I keep thinking that if it will be THAT bad, we need to try and sell (like everyone else) before it happens and our property value drops even more...

Thanks, I appreciate it!
Amy

I am sorry to say...SELL...as soon as you can, if you can. Forget about property values and what they tell you, the health detriments of living near a quarry will be a killer, especialy if you have kids to consider.

Quarries do cause significant problems as you described. But the bigger issue is what schinz brought up, your health and that of your family. If you can get out, do it.

I think I know where that area is. If its northeast of Boyertown Pa. then they've been fighting that quarry for about 15 years or longer.
I drive past a quarry often and its not an issue, except for the big trucks that constantly go in and out of it. Its ugly but still way better than a landfill or a housing development or a strip mall. This quarry is big and the only neighbors are farms so I don't know how noisy or bad it is. Other quarries get in the news from time to time about blasting causing minor property damage.
There's a cement factory in the county that gets bad press about causing health and breathing concerns.

It is northest of Boyertown, and you're right they have been fighting it for a long time - it just seems like the fight is winding down. There is a meeting next Monday with the township - they sayd to "discuss their pending "settlement"".

Before I use to tell myself that we had "time" before anything would go on, now I have that feeling that its going to happen and I need to decide what to do. Just lousy timing trying to sell now, and I love my house

How far away, or how close to, do you live from this proposed quarry?

Another good question would be EXACTLY which direction, and how, do you live from the proposed quarry. Prevailing wind directions and proximity to the quarry can be CRITICAL to possible health effects.

Less than 1 mile for sure and of course when the wind blows, and it always seems to be blowing, its always from where the quarry will be, towards our house I'm starting to accept the idea and I need to get outta here!

Also, don't forget about the sinkholes!

a quarry in Hanover (not new hanover) causes a fair amount of sinkholes in adjoining farmland. It's interesting to see the new sinkhole that appears each month.
