Red Lion/York area
Can anyone please tell me about the schools in these areas. I'd also like to know if there are stores that are close(within 15 min) of these areas. We are relocating to PA this year & would like some info on these areas. We have 2 daughters, ages 13yrs & 2 1/2 yrs. If anyone could give me some info on property taxes and utilities, that would be great. Thank you.

Red Lion just voted to shut two elementary schools. There are tons of stores and malls in central York area, primarily close or just off Routes 30 and 83. There is Macy's, Bon Ton, Boscovs, Penneys, Sears, Target, WalMart, KMart, Home Depot, Lowes, grocery stores, shoe stores, craft stores and just about every formula and fast food restaurant you would ever want. Best areas (school districts) tend to be Suburban, Central and Dallastown. What size house are you talking about. 2,000 square feet is probably going to run anywhere from 200-250K depending on it's condition, amenities, neighborhood. Taxes are different for each school district/municipality~city taxes are the highest and schools are the poorest, however rent and purchase price will be the lowest. It's tough to make generalizations, but York is a decent place to raise a family, lots of low cost and free things to do, within driving distance for day trips of Baltimore and Philadelphia. We have great health care, two hospitals, lots of churches, parks, summer park activities etc. Snow removal is decent for most storms...what else is important?

We love York, PA and have lived there going on 4 years now. We are in the Dallastown school district and chose it because it was one of the best. My favorite thing about where we live is the convenience to 83, but also to downtown York. They have small farm baseball league called the York Revolutions and the stadium is brand new and there is not a bad seat in the house. Great kid activities there as well. That is located in downtown York.
This is also a great area for organic living. We love the orchards and small farms. We visit Brown's Orchards and the Amish Farmers market weekly. Perrydell is right down the way off Leader Heights for organic milk. The summer activities for the kids are great. Lots of berry picking, park summer programs, Nixon Park is a favorite for kids! Everything is so affordable here especially for kids. We are from a big city and the costs of my friends kids activities are almost triple of what I pay for my children's extracurricular programs.
York's proximity to major cities also offers alot of options. Baltimore is just 45 min. south, Harrisburg 30 min north and DC about an 1 1/2 depending on traffic. We take our kids to the National Zoo all the time and over the 4th of July we went to Philadelphia! So much history etc. You will not run out of things to do with the kids.
I can also reccommend a great preschool for you that all my friends use if that is of interest. They fill up fast though, so I'm not sure if there would be any availability. It's called Eastminster preschool off Haines Rd. just north of the Mt. Rose exit on 83. Everyone sends their kids there.
Hope this info helps. Good luck and WELCOME!

Wow! Thank you so much for all that info. I actually heard Dallastown had a good school district. I will be looking into that. Can't wait to do berry picking. My kids will love that.
