Default Relocating to York, PA area...Need a Job and a Home.

My wife starts a new job in York, PA next month and we'll be moving as soon as I can find a job and sell our current house (boy! it's going to be fun, isn't it! Ha!). I currently work as a Clinical Dietitian at a VA Medical Center and would like to stay with the VA system. There are 5 VA Med Centers within a 60 mile commute from York (Lebanon & Coatesville, PA and Baltimore (2) and Perry Point, MD). The problem is there are no openings for a Clinical Dietitian at this time at any of these facilities. I really need to find a job first in order to know what area around York to look for a home. My family consists of my wife, 3 yo child, 2 dogs (who need roaming room), and 3 cats. My wife's job will be in the south York area. What would be a good area to live that could would make commuting north, south, or east fairly easy. Any ideas, suggestions, comments that may help me? Thanks!

First good luck selling your house .

Second I would look at anything off 83. We live off the Queen Street exit and it takes only a few min. to reach the hwy. It's a great area with lots of classic colonial homes with more land than newer houses that are so close together. Lots of charm, room for the animals to run and the kids to play.

Good luck with everything!

York itself has two hospitals, and there is also a small one in Hanover (west of York) and Columbia (just over the river in Lancaster County). There are also a ton of retirement communities, rehabilitation centers and nursing homes. I would imagine that you should be able to find something in your field. With a 45 minute commute you could also be in the city of Lancaster or Harrisburg, all with about the same type of facilities. Check the newspapers and your professional associations for openings/offerings.

Definitely second the proximity to I-83 if you're not certain what area to get to. There is a "Clinical Dietitian Specialist" position open here: Penn State Hershey Jobs York and Hershey are close as the crow flies but not so much driving. North end of York area, Emigsville & Strinestown, might not be too bad commute to Hershey taking the PA Turnpike toll bridge. I-83 into Harrisburg stacks up routinely at 581.

I think that there is a Va Facility in Camp Hill/ Lemoyne area... Moving is hectic if you take time to do your homework everything should fall into place for you.

Good Luck!

VA Clinic on the Camp Hill Bypass. Probably doesn't need a dietitian though.

Thanks to everyone for their comments and assistance. My wife has been working her new job since April 6 and loves it. She is enjoying the commute from her sister's residence in Havre De Grace, MD. It only takes about 60 min and the drive is beautiful. She really likes the York area and everyone has been very friendly and helpful. I'm still in WV with our 3 yo daughter and getting the house up for sale and still trying to find a job. As DCable01 said, I am hopeful all will fall into place. BYW, I can't wait to take my daughter to a York Revolution game. What a nice stadium and lots of family oriented events. Go Revs!
