Would recommend reading? I've heard negative things about all the crime there? Is there a nice suburb or something that is still well developed that a 22yr old female could live safely? Which you recommend between Reading and Harrisburg?

The area near Paper Mill Road in Reading is nice and new, big box stores, a mall, new apartments, near the highway...and safe.It is your best bet.

Default Not far from Pottsville and liking it

I recently took a transfer from Meadville in western PA to Harrisburg. We built a nice house on a mountain ridge near Halifax and we love it. That's about 45 miles from Pottsville. Though we're not exactly spring chickens - I'm 53 - we have a lot of young friends and they like the area and have stuff going on every weekend. The economy was real bad in western PA and a lot of people are moving out of there. Though we enjoyed living there, we'd pretty much done all there was to do there. We find a lot of new places to explore here. There are plenty of jobs here and the economy's much better. There's something going on just about every week, whether an art or music festival in one of the cities, a motorcycle run in the country, a battle re-enactment at one of the civil war battlefields, ballgames, car shows, Hershey Park, Renaissance Fair, concerts...Lot of stuff to do. Philadelphia is a big urban sprawl but it has a zillion sights to see and numerous thoroughly excellent places to eat. The same is true of Baltimore which is only an hour and a half away. The Susquehanna over here around Harrisburg has some of the best smallmouth and walleye fishing in the world. You can get to the real nice beaches around Rehoboth Delaware in about 3 hours. New York City is about the same distance. The commuter rail network is so-so now but they're initiating a system-wide modernization now so that holds a lot of promise. Like anywhere, there are real nice places to live and there are jerk backwaters that are best avoided.

I have to agree here. Pottsville/Schuylkill or Reading/Berks is, putting it nicely, struggling. Above (or below) that, people are very close-minded, not overly friendly, and are very resistant to change.... hey! I just described myself !!!
