Default WALKABLE pedestrian-friendly areas in PA outside of Phil/Pitt?

Having lived in NYC (very walkable and pedestrian-friendly)...and seen photos of places like ITHACA, NY...also seems very walkable and pedestrian friendly.

It seems the theme is cities that were PRE-AUTOMOBILE. Mainly, walkable and pedestrian friendly. You're able to easily walk out of your house and go rent a movie or eat at a restaurant without having to get into your car to do so.

Where parts of Pennsylvania would be like that? Seems like Pittsburgh and Philadelphia of course.

How about the smaller areas? I guess it also comes to question, are they liveable with jobs and somewhat decent places to raise a family?

New Hope, Bucks County, PA. Maybe Newtown as well. Hatboro/Horsham or Willow Grove area in Montgomery County, PA - depending on where exactly you live/how close you live to town. I lived in Horsham for a short time and right across the street was a food store, Walmart, Dairy Queen and a little pizza/hoagie place. It was also only a short walk up the road from Hatboro/York Road which has tons of shops and restaurants. A little bit longer of a walk but still realistic was the train station into Philly. But I do think the nearest Blockbuster was a short drive away, not really walkable. And there are other neighborhood in Horsham which wouldn't be as close to all these things.

Two "smaller" areas of PA.....our two favorite small towns in the commonwealth........Jim Thorpe PA (Pocono mountains) and Wellsboro PA (North Central mountains). Everything in both towns is completely walkable.....from post office, to banking, to shopping and dinning.

There are literally thousands of towns in PA that are very walkable. If you are talking cities, then you have State College, Bethlehem, Harrisburg, Lancaster, etc.

You might like West Chester which is a college town, though folks of all ages enjoy living there. I understand that it is a nice, walkable town. here is the town's website: Downtown West Chester PA - The Perfect Town, Downtown West Chester Pennsylvania and West Chester BID

Yeah, I was thinking of small cities...

Speaking of which, I wrote down a small list...Bethlehem, Lancaster, State College (as you mentioned), plus Lebanon, Easton, Scranton, Wilkes-Barre...

Are some I should be crossing off my list however? Maybe due to excessive crime (seems like I've read some places like Reading are somewhat unliveable in the most pedestrian-friendly of areas of it)...am I wrong on that? Others like Reading I should be crossing off my list?

Lancaster, Easton and Lebanon are okay during the day but some areas can be shaky at night.

Honestly, Lebanon doesn't have much during the day to recommend it, either.

State College has a fairly extensive paved trail system in addition to the sidewalks.

Our Harrisburg hiking club sometimes does town hikes especially during hunting season or further into the winter. We'll walk the Harrisburg Greenbelt, around Camp Hill, Mechanicsburg, New Cumberland, Hershey, and Lewisburg, but the all time favorite is... Lititz. http://www.satc-hike.org/ofh36.pdf

Actually for a recent statewide hiking meeting we did walk around downtown and old Westmont - rode the incline one way and trail down. I had wanted to do that from Harrisburg but with the second train gone the logistics didn't work.
