So called "hate organizations" (two or more people who give a hoot about european americans) are well represented in the area. National Vanguard, Nationalist Coalition, American Renaissance, Council of Conservative Citizens, National Rifle Association, Citizens for the Preservation of Firearms, etc.
Nordicfest was held there three times in the last ten years. More than ten thousand people attended. You might want to avoid the area if you're afraid of "neo-nazis".

lol....every town in Lancaster county is conservative, with the possible exception of Millersville (which is still immediately surrounded by Bush land) and Elizabethtown (college plus a lot of in-migration from more liberal metros settling here). Lancaster city is the only place that has some genuinely liberal neighborhoods (you know, artsy coffee drinking types ).

Lancaster County does tend to vote strongly Republican in both Presidential and Gubernatorial elections (though pro-life Bob Casey was a Democrat and won the county a while back). It is a predominantly White, Protestant county. I would not as the one lady said, compare it to Alabama. For the Northeast it is relatively conservative. The Anabaptists are part of that conservative element but on the other hand they keep to themselves and don't try to force their way of life on other people. It's not the same as the "redneck" conservatism though there is some of that around the county too but not to the extreme. I've been to Lancaster for work and spent more time in Harrisburg and know people around the area... I've known several openly gay people from the area who never complained of living there. There's even a gay nightclub or 2... In addition to the German-Protestant element that dominates, South Central PA also had a Scotch-Irish influence and areas where they settled (Appalachia, The inland South, New Hampshire, The Shenandoah Valley of VA...) tend to be more conservative
According to a map I saw by the Glenmary Research Center that shaded in Counties with the highest percentage of "Evangelical" or Conservative Protestants- it outlined the Southern Bible belt as well as a few mini bible belts outside the South (Western Michigan, Colorado Springs, South Central PA from Lancaster County on West to maybe 2 counties west of Chambersburg. )
I'm not sure if you want to live where its conservative or not but Lancaster and its surroundings, like I said lean strongly to the right but I do not sense an oppressive vibe there as I have in other parts of the country...
As for the hate groups, theyre there and in York County too but they seem to spend more of their time undercover or spreading their hate in internet blogs than burning crosses in yards. As for the NRA theyre not a hate group though some of their rhetoric can seem to give that vibe. A lot of Pennsylvanians who sport the NRA sticker (my dad was a member years ago) tend to be more hunting enthusiasts (who may have a handgun or 2 hidden in their house just in case) and some who just put the sticker on cause it's "macho" and it warns people not to mess with them. but not really the radical, paranoid, ideologue type.

Philly To Lancaster - Lititz
"...A growing group of commuters are taking the train to Philly to work and have found the experience to be a pleasure..."
This is ironic, I have been asked to interview with a hospital in Lititz. I would be commuting from Philly. Do folks who commute to Philly take Amtrak...
I'm thinking I would have to do the same.
Could you give me some direction as to how this commute would be for me? Would I have to take a taxi or bus once I get to Lancaster or Lititz?
Thanks,

Wow! A lot of people REALLY hate living in Lancaster County. Why don't you folks all move to Scranton so I can have some neighbors other than whiny middle-aged burn-outs and crotchety old people?

I've been to Lancaster many times. It's my impression that the entire county is very "classic Americana" (which is the term I would use in lieu of "neo-nazi"). Made even more so by the large number of Middle class people who have moved into the Southern part to "escape" Baltimore, the Northern part to "escape" Harrisburg, and the Eastern Part to "escape" the Philadelphia burbs.

Warren Jeffs must have visited this area many times... I have never in my life seen so many mal-formed, retarded individuals that look at the "outside world" (anything that is on the outskirts of the county with the exception to perhaps Lebanon County) as the "Devil's Work!". Lancaster tourism boasts itself on hospitality - what a crock! If you want to pay to come and see farm fields interwined with pathetic restaurants and lame outlet shopping excursions then Lancaster PA is the place for you. Just remember to bring your Great, Great Grandparents so they will fit into the tapestry of nursing homes, walkers and wheelchairs that smother the entire area. Lancaster, PA is the ALABAMA of the north - The only bad thing is that these people are German immigrants (rather outcasts) because European Germans are very sexy... in Lancaster, the Germans are more like the cowpies of the region. Be a smart individual and go elsewhere to visit and don't waste good money on a bad area.

LOL!
You are so right!
In regards to the "smorgasboard's", which I call "The temple of obesity". I've already almost had fist fights with the locals while standing in the food lines at these places! Don't get in there way when they are hunger! These people get very mean and nasty, if you block them from the food!
