Default Allergies in Lancaster county

Hi everybody!

For all of those who have relocated to Lancaster County do you feel your allergies are worse the same or better from where you originally lived?

I have heard a few different opinions, would like to hear more. Some have told me if you have a problem with pollen then reconsider your move to Lancaster because Lancaster has so many farms and Lancaster has a bit of a pollution problem.

Others said that their allergies are no longer a problem.

So what is your opinion?

Thank you very much!

My husband suffers greatly with allergies here. He has always had the problem, but it seems to be worse here in Lancaster (he's from a suburb of Philadelphia). I don't think the farms help the situation. I occasionally suffer from spring pollen/fall ragweed, but I can't compare to other areas because I've lived here most of my life.

The only place I ever heard that is best for allergies is Arizona.

Good luck!

Default Thank you

Bbsinger,

Thank you. I guess allergies are the last thing i'm worried about, i was just curious to why people were telling me that, it wont hold back my move. Actually we are in Nevada & have been in Arizona and for some reason our allergies are worse in those states then it was when we lived on Long Island NY. Thanks again

I have heard that by eating the local honey, it makes your body build up antibodies naturally to what is in your area.

Default Smells

So far, I have had limited allergy problems in Lancaster, but then again the blooms are not in full effect yet. One thing to warn you, once the temperatures get warm, it smells a lot throughout Lancaster County because of the manure. They use manure everywhere, which is good and means this food is organic and no chemicals are in the ground as a result. When I am at work, I smell it. At home, I smell it. The smell of manure is even in my vehicles. It is much worse on warm days, especially now that it is spring time. Just a word of warning from someone else who is an import from Lancaster County, it smells...but, you will get used to it.

Overall, the scenery is worth the smells. Everything is getting green and beautiful. The birds are singing outside my window here, and just before I saw squirrels playing in my yard. I grew up near Scranton (Pittston to be exact), and I have to say I would take the smells with the scenery anyday...it is better than seeing delapatated "rust-belt" conditions and mine subsidence!

I tried the honey thing since I moved here, but it is too soon to tell. Also, my honey is fron York Springs! Isn't there anyplace who makes honey here in Lancaster County? If so, where can I get it (I'm in the southern end)?

Default Lancaster Allergies

I never had a problem with pollen until I moved to Eastern Lancaster County, Pa. I though I would skate this year (a cool spring), but I got hit badly right around election day May 15. I felt like I had pneumonia as my lungs felt heavy and I coughed, chocked and rubbed my eyes.

My house backs up to a farmer's field, but there'ss nothing planted yet! My kids are getting allergies as well. I grew up in Philadelphia area and didn't have a problem with allergies until I was about 40.

Pollen.com says the main culprits are oak, birch and maple...well that explains it...next to the field behind me is my neighbor's four wooded acres.

Lancaster County is much worse than average, but not nearly as bad as Phoenix. Southcentral PA supposedly has the highest per capita concentration of Doctors specializing in allergy treatment in the entire country!

Default Smog? Pollen?

Whats the cause of Lancaster having such a serious allergy, asthma problem anyway? So many tree's? Smog?

Are you originally from Phoenix? I was there last week, and yes my allergies were pretty bad all week.
